Mary Kom Returns to Action in March



Back in Action

One of the most celebrated Indian Sportsperson aka the Six time World Champion Boxer Mary Kom is set to return to competitive action after a gap of one year. She’ll return to the action at the Boxam International in Castellon, Spain. She will step into the ring for the first time since qualifying for the Tokyo 2021 Olympics at the Asian qualifiers, held in March last year.

Mary Kom, who was laid low by dengue last year, has just joined the national camp in Bangalore last month. Mary will compete in the 51kg category; she is one of 14 Indian boxers who will be competing in the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from March 1 to 7, the Boxing Federation of India said in a statement.

The Boxam Meet

All nine Indian boxers who have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics so far will be seen in action at Boxam meet. The tournament will also be a competitive return for Manish Kaushik, who qualified for his maiden Olympics at Amman but had suffered an injury during the process.

World Championship silver-medalist Amit Panghal (52kg), who won gold in the recently-concluded Cologne World Cup in Germany, will also compete at the Spanish event. Joining him in the event would be Hussamuddin Mohammed (57 kg), Vikas Krishan Yadav (69 kg), Ashish Kumar (75kg), Sumit Sangwan (81kg), Sanjeet (91kg) and Satish Kumar (+91 kg). 

Of these, Amit, Vikas, Ashish, Satish and Manish have qualified for the Tokyo Games.In the Women’s section consists of Lovlina Borgohain (69kg), Pooja Rani (75kg) and Simranjit Kaur (60kg) are among the other Olympic qualifiers who will be competing in Castellon.

The boxers who are currently in the national camp are undergoing final preparations ahead of these crucial preparatory matches.
