Synopsis - Spoiler Alert!

Two little innocent girls, their father and an abandoned cabin in a forest- the foundation for a series of terrifying events is laid. The father of those girls brings them in the cabin made amidst the forest after the demise of their mother and soon after his arrival there, he dies leaving the two kids alone in the woods.

The girls are discovered miraculously again by a team upon the request of their uncle, Lucas who is the identical twin of their father after a long time span of five years, and he decides to bring them home with him, irrespective of his girlfriend’s (Annabelle) comfort to take the responsibility of the kids.

Both the girls Victoria and Lilly have almost forgotten the traits of humans and behave reluctantly. They are kept in the hospital until they get better but they speak about an unknown ‘Mama’ and claim that she used to be with them and has followed them here too.

Although doctors claim it to be just an imagination which they used to fight with the loneliness in the woods, upon research the same woman is found to have existed once matching the exact description which Victoria has provided.

After a strange accident of her boyfriend that is an attack by Mama, Anna finds it hard to look after the girls and create a bond with them as Victoria always warns her about Mama being jealous of her when she takes care of them. She starts dreaming about the real identity of Mama, and her past and faces a series of unexplainable events.

In all the hustle, Mama takes the girls to the cliff to re-enact her past but Lucas and Anna reach on time and save the girls by returning the remains of the infant which were the root cause of all these events and Edith’s spirit being bound to this world. Mama turns into a humanly figure for an instant but turns back into the deadly ghost when Lilly calls for her.

Anna sticks to Victoria who decides to stay with Anna rather than leaving with Mama but Lilly being young and innocent goes away with Mama, falling from the cliff and turning into a moth.

She sits on Victoria’s hand as a moth, signifying that her spirit will always be there with her, giving the plot a much more emotional ending than expected.

Psychological analysis

‘Mama’ depicts the power and strength of the desires, motherhood and the consequences of the unfulfilled wishes. It also throws light on the innocence and tenderness of a child’s mind and how situations can turn a person upside down.

Motherhood is the greatest pleasure and an enjoyable emotion that almost every woman dreams of but for those who, for some reason, are unable to live this beautiful feeling , it becomes a craving to try every possible means to feel it.

‘Mama’ portrays the consequences of such a craving that turns a soul into a nasty, powerful and dreadful spirit. The strong desire to enjoy motherhood restricts a soul from attaining peace.

A child is the epitome of innocence and kindness. They have love for everyone who loves them or cares for them without sensing the real intentions behind that care they receive. This trait of toddlers has been beautifully depicted through the character of Lily in the movie giving it an emotional touch of another level.

Her tender heart thinks of the spirit as her mother and she loves her as a daughter irrespective of the nasty and ghostly appearance of the entity making us fall in love with her cuteness and innocence with her character.

Mind-Blowing Quotes from ‘Mama’

  1. A ghost is an emotion bent out of shape, condemned to repeat itself, time and time again until it rights the wrong that was done.”

  1. “There is no rational explanation that supports this theory. But it is only the ability to embrace the different reality that makes science expand beyond the limits of what we know.”

  1. “I'm not a religious person, but I do believe there's a place for human remains, and it's not on a shelf in a government building.”

The Bottom Line

‘Mama’ is really an eye-catchy and wonderful thriller experience. It will make you astonished, excited, thrilled, terrified and yet will successfully bring tears to your eyes at some amazing moments on the screen. It will really force you to think about motherhood in a unique  way like you have never have thought before.
