Mental Age vs Chronological Age

At some point or another, we have all questioned the authority of a person over us only because that person is older than us, we have questioned the social ways where the older child is supposedly more responsible than the younger one.

Time and again there has been criticism of the concept of giving duties, responsibilities, or authority just on the basis of chronological age. The concept of considering a person more responsible because he has spent more time on earth than the other has also been questioned.

Not just socially but also scientifically scientists have observed that chronological age cannot be the only deciding factor to decide the capabilities of a person and thus the concept of mental age evolved.

While chronological age refers to the actual amount of time a person has spent on earth, mental age refers to the mental ability of a person. Mental age is a measure of a person especially children perform mentally, it calculated in comparison with the average performance of other people at that age.

For eg., when a 10-year-old child is evaluated for mental age then he will be evaluated in comparison to the average performance of other 10-year-olds. If his/her performance falls below the average performance of other 10-year-olds then it means his mental age is less than 10, no matter his chronological age. And in case if the data matches with that of a 9-year-old then it would mean that his/her mental age is 9 years.

The concept of mental age can help us understand how to treat other people based on their mental matureness and not merely based on time spent on earth. It should be employed as a major tool in the education system.

In most countries, the system of admission and designation of classes is based on
chronological age, for eg., all 8-year-olds are first graders, but this chronological age does in no way ensure the mental development required for that particular grade.

Thus, mental age should be used as a tool to understand the capabilities of a person.
