Movie Review: Five Feet Apart

Cystic Fibrosis is a lung and stomach disease in which the body produces very thick mucus that clogs the lungs and obstructs the pancreas. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening disease and people with CF are likely to have a shorter lifespan than normal people.

Too much of technical knowledge, right? Well, the Five Feet Apart movie is based on a girl and a boy, who both have Cystic Fibrosis. Now, you must be thinking, what’s unique in this? The uniqueness comes in the fact that Cystic Fibrosis patients can get near to normal people but they have to be always six feet apart from other Cystic Fibrosis patients (Cystic Fibrosis patients are often called CFers).

They have to maintain this distance all the time because CFers are highly infectious when they come in contact with each other. They can get contaminated very easily if there is any passage of germs through whatsoever way, doesn’t matter. CFers have to be Six Feet Apart all the time.

So, the movie starts with Stella (Haley Ru Richardson) visiting the hospital to get admitted and is setting up her hospital room. She likes her room to be very organized as she also suffers from OCD. When she was stressing over all the hustle bustle that was in her room, she was being observed by Will (Cole Sprouse) who is another CFer but on experimental medication.

On one hand, Stella is very optimistic and hyper-attentive to her treatment, hoping to get a lung transplant, Will was the exact opposite, a rebel, who has lost all hope from the treatment and is just getting it for the sake of it.

But then, love finds its way through all hells and bounds. Stella and Will started from being friends. Stella had a YouTube channel in which she describes her CF journey to her subscribers who are really fascinated about how strong she is. So, Stella offered Will to organize his room and making a medicine schedule as Will was not willing to cope with the nurses.

Both of they had really deep conversations and started having feelings for each other. They were compelled by each other’s greatness and their life stories. They tried really hard to stay away from each other but were devastated when Stella’s hospital friend, Poe (Moises Aries) die because of CF.

Stella was adamant that this relation won’t work but Will on the other hand wanted to make it works and then they suddenly Stella realized that Poe never get to live his life to the fullest so they both decided to keep a five feet long stick with them every time they will meet to make them realize their boundaries.

Will and Stella decided to sneak out on one fine night to go and dance around the frozen lake. They both for having fun but suddenly Will hears a creak from the ground and he saw that Stella has fallen into the frozen lake hole. He gets her out of the hole but her breathing levels were really low.

So, to save Stella, Will gave her CPR. (Remember! CFers are not allowed to get too close and CPR included lip-to-lip contact). Stella survived because of Will but was still unconscious and after some time, Will also lost his consciousness.

On the other hand, at the hospital, arrived a girl who was in a terrible accident, was brain dead and her lungs were an exact match for Stella. Her parents, hospital staff were trying Will and Stella’s phone time and again but it was obviously unreachable.

Anywho, hospital staff found both of them and Stella was not convinced about taking the new pair of lungs but Will talked her into taking it. Will also took a sigh of relief when he got to know that neither of them got any infection.

After the surgery, When Stella woke up, she saw Will from the glass window. He told her that his only regret was that they were not able to see the lights together so he brought them to her. He also told her that the trial medication is not working on him and he doesn’t want to put Stella in this condition where she will see Will die eventually.

In the end, Will gave Stella a notebook of his drawings and confesses his love to her and then he asked her to close her eyes so that she won’t see him leaving. Stella closer her eyes and Will walks away silently.

Years after, Stella is seen on her YouTube Channel, explaining to everyone the importance of touching each other, realizing how lucky you are if you are able to touch each other or can confess their love to each other.

This movie will definitely take you on an emotional roller coaster ride with tears of joy and sorrow flowing together. This movie is a must-watch as it will make you realize the importance of love and loving the person you love.
