What Is Multiple Intelligence and Multiple Intelligences Theory?

Origin Of Theory

It is a theory given by Dr. Howard Gardner, in 1983. Dr Gardner was a professor of education at Harvard University. The theory suggests that the traditional concept of intelligence based on IQ testing are quite narrow.

He suggests in his theory of multiple intelligence that all people have different kinds of "intelligence". So, he proposed eight different types of intelligence to define intelligence in a very broad sense.

Then in 2009, he added another aspect of intelligence known as existential. So, in
total there are nine different types of intelligence the person has which are
interrelated to each other and some are independent of each other.

The Intelligence Modalities

1. Linguistic intelligence - Means the command over the language. It means how
fluent is a person in that particular language or how easily he can express
himself or how easily he can grasp the ideas given in the particular language.
The carrier choices for this type of intelligence could be philosophers or could
be a teacher etc.

2. Logical and mathematical intelligence -  As the name suggests, this type of
people can solve mathematical problems very easily. People with this intelligence are good at reasoning, recognizing patterns and logically analyzing problems.

They think conceptually about numbers, relationships and patterns. The carrier choices for this type of intelligence could be scientists, engineers, accountant and mathematician etc.

3. Interpersonal intelligence - Means how easily the person is able to have a
conversation with another person, for example, politicians, counsellors etc.
People with this intelligence convince others very easily. They often enjoy
discussion and debate.

4. Interpersonal intelligence - This is quite related to the previous one but in this
intelligence, the person should be able to get what are the inner feelings of
another person or himself as well. Such as the physiologist do.

5. Musical intelligence - It can be of operating a different type of instruments or
can be singing or can be any other thing related to music. The carrier choices
for this type of intelligence can be singer, musician etc.

6. Bodily-kinesthetics - People with this intelligence are generally good at physical
activities such as sports, dance and making things. Carrier choices for this
intelligence can be athletes, bodybuilder or anything which are related to
sports.

7. Spatial intelligence - Means the people who have the ability to visualize with  the mind's eye. It is defined as the conceptual capacity that provides the
ability to solve problems of navigation, notice fine details or investigating
things.

8. Naturalistic intelligence - Means how a person can withstand with the
environment or how easily he can adapt to his surroundings. Such types of
person can become farmers, Gardner's etc.

9. Existential intelligence - This is a special type of intelligence because this type
of people can grasp things that are not tangible or which might not be visible,
such as philosophers, cosmologist.

Conclu
sion

Each person has a different intellectual composition so, educators should not follow one specific method when designing instruction but rather employ customized methods to teaching and learning need.

If educator addresses multiple intelligence then it could help educators to do a better assessment and at the same time, it also helps the student to increase their learning and knowledge.
