Twitter Loses Intermediary Status in India: All You Need To Know

We are living in the era of social media and there are around 4.33 billion social media users. That means more than 60% of the world's population is active on social media and the largest number of active social media users are from India itself. As India is a democratic country, there are no restrictions on any social media platforms.
So, many social media platforms are prevailing in India successfully and Twitter is one of them. Twitter is a multi-billion-dollar company that has its reach all over the globe and has a significant chunk in the Indian sub-continent also.
If we try to observe the graph of Twitter's growth then we will come to know, that it was just the last decade that gave tremendous growth and stability to the financial structure of Twitter.
Disputes are everywhere but there are some disputes which can impact human behaviour with strong emotional and sensitive issues and in the case of Twitter, the world is constantly observing the rising number of disputes, and particularly with political personalities and institutions.

Twitter's Aggression
In the last year when the United States Presidential Elections were going on, in the middle of the elections, Twitter banned the account of the Republican Party's candidate and former President Donald Trump. It also tried to manipulate the account of Google's CEO Sunder Pichai.
These types of notorious steps hinder the process of ethical development and coordination. Now latest report suggests that Twitter has lost its intermediary status in India for not cooperating with the New Information Technology rules which came into existence on May 26, 2021.
According to a government official, if any social media platform fails to follow, this new set of IT rules, it will no longer be protected from penal action under Section 79 of the Information Technology Act, which can save social media firms from the liability of the third-party content.
Now, if there is a court case, then Twitter cannot seek any sort of help under the Information Technology Act. In any case, which is filed after May 26, 2021, Twitter cannot say that it is an intermediary and cannot claim any exception.
Despite the government's extra time to social media firms to corporate with the rules, Twitter has failed to meet even its deadline of a week to make the arrangements as per the new Information Technology rules. Recently Twitter said that it has appointed an interim chief compliance officer and the details of the appointment will be shared directly with the Information and Technology Ministry of India.
But the government officials said that the details of the compliance officer's appointment were yet to be shared with the government. This blame game continues to form a complex void in the process of communication with the problem of integrity and compliance.

Impact of New IT Rules
The social media platforms are working a lot, with constant improvement, for the betterment of society, and it shows the level of efforts that they put into society to share their thoughts and ideas with the rest of the world.
But somehow, people have started to misuse it with several other activities which includes phishing, espionage, cyberattacks, etc. which creates a tremendous level of distrust among the people of the society. The basic structure of social media is to understand human behaviour and eventually reforms the user interface of the platform.
But many users use it to manipulate someone, so, the user interface cannot cooperate with the algorithm of the platform because the user interface will become more suitable for those types of people who manipulate others.
So, it is the responsibility of Twitter or any other social media platform to comply with the New Information Technology rules to create an ethical and safe platform for the sensible user base and to change some policies and make some strict rules which can secure user's data to protect them from any fraud.

Conclusion
To ensure a secure and safe platform of social media, various social media giants are developing their technologies to ensure full safety of data for their users but still a big space is insecure, because of leniency in data protection.
For that various governments, of different nations, decided to make their own social media rules to protect their citizens from any cyberattack. So, according to the Indian government, all social media platforms are required to comply with the new IT rules otherwise they will lose their intermediary status.
So, they need to analyse human behaviour with more technological methods on a deep scale and bring change in their user interface to make it more user-friendly but with the security of data protection and cybersecurity because data security should be of utmost priority.
