Korean dramas have always been known for their medical, crime, and legal genres, but this one is above all. Such dramas always have a puzzle piece missing and that’s what makes you stick throughout, maybe even marathon viewing the show.
Let’s dive into the missing puzzle piece I am talking about.
Introduction
Show’s Name - Law School
Directed by - Kim Seok-Yoon
No. of Episodes - 16
Genre - Legal Drama
Original Language - Korean (Available with English subtitles)
A Gist of Its Plot
The drama is set in a law university named Hankuk University which tells us the story of its students and professors who get involved in a murder case that takes place at the university itself.
This prestigious law school becomes a highlight and nuisance to the Korean education system when a top-notch professor (a former prosecutor) and his students are suspects or witnesses to an unprecedented case.
The drama also contains an absolutely incredible cast, all majoring in law with compassion to become the best prosecutors in the nation.
First Impression - Show Review
Kim Beom’s main role in the drama was just enough to draw my attention towards it after his amazing role play in the drama ‘Tale of the Nine Tailed’. If you haven’t read my review on that one yet, you might as well check it out.
“Truth and Justice Only by the Law”
He was the reason I started watching it. And then came the opening shot, I was astounded. We are shown a group of complex puzzle pieces in Professor Yang’s room and a beautiful voice talking about Truth and Justice through Law. The mock trial scene in the first episode itself was eye-catching.
Not every legal drama gets onto that, especially presenting students that believe in law enough to bring change in the system with their high intellectual capacity to think forth and beyond.
Each episode is muddled by a jumpy timeline and a wide range of characters to get to know. The two main storylines are what gets the drama going: Professor Yang dealing with the murder charge in Professor Seo’s death and Assemblyman Kim’s connection with the case. Here lies the missing puzzle piece.
Their powerful performances will really make one enjoy the show aside from the various storylines that are connected to each other. To be honest, you may find some scenes implausible but the energy and curiosity might still keep you fixated.
To no surprise, the drama was on roll from the start gaining momentum in its viewership ratings which is also why I suggest you watch it.
Things You Will Love About Its Premiere
1. The characters - There are some really amazing roles you must look out for.
Professor Yang is also called “Yangcrates” by everyone at Hankuk University - Though old, his character is that of a straightforward, charismatic, well-educated, and prestigious professor who teaches criminal law.
The professor surely is strict but loves his students and wants them to become the prosecutors no one higher could crumple upon. He has his subtle ways of motivating students by giving off biting remarks only to make them better at law in the process.
(Episode 16)
Kang Sol A and Han Joon-Hwi are the best duos of first-year law students out there. Their bond will give you it all - spicy, fun, and romantic vibes. You would also want their relationship to develop into one like that soon but trust me their friendship scenes just get right to the core of viewers.
Kang Sol A is called ‘A’ not because she is a topper but because her roommate (also her classmate) has the same name. She is a slow learner who comes from a poor family background raised by a single mother, is surrounded by smart students from a wealthy background that sometimes makes her feel insecure and shameful.
However, due to her past experience for which she was transferred to a juvenile center, she is bound to make the law apologize to her and all those whom it charges guilty wrongfully. She also shares a particularly friendly relationship with Yang.
Han Joon-Hwi is an attractive young topper student with gentlemanly and leadership qualities. He yearns for justice even if it is his uncle, Professor Seo, who had done wrong and wanted him to surrender for his crime.
2. The Legal Squad
Source - Pinterest
The squad consists of the famous legal gang first-year students and two of their professors who give their all to solve a mysterious case. It also consists of the xerox shop owner Sung Dong-il who has failed the bar exam 10+ times but is always motivating the squad to work harder to solve the case.
The squad is a mixture of students and each comes with their own backstories that are brought to light sooner than one would expect. One has plagiarised a dissertation to get into Hankuk, one is involved in a toxic and sexually abusive relationship while others are still dealing with the effects of the past.
But the best part is they all help each other in their miseries and work towards becoming confident to set the legal system right.
The mock trial scenes will draw you towards them and their never-ending passion towards the subject fighting with a strong will.
Personal Verdict
“But when you teach law, the law must be perfect” (Professor Yang)
Professor Yang always has believed in giving the best to teach his students how to make law help them using the right ways and teach the**holes that the law is not something they can order around. He is the protagonist one would fall in love with. The drama highlights the flaws of Korea’s legal system and presents a good change of pace.
The Bottom Line
‘Stream It!’ The drama will give you a good feeling because there aren’t too many tangents to focus on, hence, this should be a good series to start with.
