Synopsis - Spoiler Alert!
The book is a story about Captain Ahab’s hunt for revenge for Moby Dick, the white whale who bit off his leg. The narrator guiding us through these explorations is a common sailor called Ishmael. Ishmael starts out by telling his own story as he prepares to escape the damp and drizzly November in his soul by going to sea.
He befriends the Pacific Islander Queequeg and joins Ahab’s crew aboard the Pequod. Ahab, who Ishmael and his friend Queequeg soon learn is losing his mind over revenge. Starbuck, Ahab’s first-mate, recognizes this problem too and is the only one throughout the novel to voice his disapproval of Ahab’s increasingly obsessive behavior.
The “Pequod” sets sail, and the crew is soon informed that this journey will be unlike their other whaling missions: this time, Ahab intends to hunt and kill the beastly Moby Dick no matter the cost.
About the Book
‘Moby Dick’ is Ishmael's narrative of the obsessive quest of Ahab, captain of the whaling ship Pequod, for revenge on Moby Dick, the giant white sperm whale that on the ship's previous voyage bit off Ahab's leg at the knee. A contribution to the literature of the American Renaissance, ‘Moby-Dick’ was published to mixed reviews, was a commercial failure, and was even out of print at one time.
We see Melville using references and styles of Plato and Shakespeare. With one chapter written as a playscript, we also see Ishmael singing about whale oil in epic style and with chapters named such as ‘cistern and buckets’, which might look uninteresting but comprise the soul of the book and make it more interesting.
