Dr. Manjot Marwah - No Matter How Tired We Are, We Can't Refuse a Patient Standing at the Door (Dermatologist From India)

Manjot Marwah

Despite it being a great tool to connect with patients, it cannot replace a personal health check-up. It may just help in shortlisting patients and giving initial treatment but the patients that need medical attention cannot be helped online.

1. Tell us about your upbringing, background, and journey.

I was born and brought up in Mumbai, as a typical Andheri girl, used to the traffic jams and pollution in Mumbai. I completed my MBBS and MD Dermatology in Mumbai too, and post my education started working at my uncle's clinic. We have a family background of a chain of skin and cosmetic clinics, by the name of Dr.Marwah's Skin and Laser Centres.

So life was pretty much set for me. I worked from 9am to 9pm and I loved it. I was never bothered by city life. Never assumed that I will move out of Bombay or wanted to, but things turned out pretty different for me.

I met my husband during my post-graduation. He belongs to a small town in Himachal called Hamirpur and when we decided to get married, everyone assumed that he will shift with me to Bombay to consider the big opportunities in a metropolitan city, however, we both decided to move to the hills, which came as a big shock to everyone.

I just followed my heart and my husband. I was anxious wondering what I am going to do in the hills if I will be able to accept the change but the real deal is you never know if you are going to like the change unless you actually do it.
Currently, I have set up my own skin, hair, and laser center here and am the most successful hair transplant surgeon and director of the most advanced laser center for skincare in the entire state, the National Hair Clinic, sitting in my small town, Hamirpur.

Also, I branched out and opened another clinic in Jalandhar, Punjab, which is purely for aesthetic dermatology, and manage both the clinics. I am also an entrepreneur and own a company that provides hair transplant instruments and training all over India. I am proud of what I have achieved and grateful that I took the decision to move. It's been 7 years now and I love every minute of peace I get here along with the work I have achieved sitting in my small town.

2. Why you choose to be a Doctor and do specifically what you want to do?

Honestly, It was something that everybody in our family did, become a doctor! Not that I regret it but at a young age itself it inspired me, to wear a lab coat, to get the Doctor's tag before my name, to have the doctor sign on the car, and all the respect that came with it.

It made me want to be a doctor once I had completed high school. But I must admit as I have matured I like Entrepreneuring along with being a doctor, which makes the challenges interesting.

3. We salute your work during the pandemic, where did you get the inspiration to work so hard?

Thanks, but I am sure most of the doctors will agree with me when I say that working hard during the pandemic, is not something a doctor needs to be inspired about. We are taught this. Our medical education in India is extremely grilling and self-sacrificing. We are taught to be selfless.

It's always patients first, then our family, then self. No matter how tired we are, we can't refuse a patient standing at the door and saying, the doctor can you please check me too. we can't refuse and say.. no I am tired or no I am scared you may have covid. No doctor will do that. It's just something that comes with the profession.

4. How do you expect digital health to grow over the next 5 years?

Many leaps and folds, considering how the pandemic has affected our social person to person or doctor to patient interactions

5. What are your concerns about Digital Health?

Despite it being a great tool to connect with patients, it cannot replace a personal health check-up. It may just help in shortlisting patients and giving initial treatment but the patients that need medical attention cannot be helped online.

6. Can you let us know anyone application of Digital Health in your country which has impressed you?

There are many, I initially was a part of docterz.com that helped me connect to my patients online and helped me resume my practice online this past year. I have friends who are working with similar portals and helping covid patients at home since access to doctors was also difficult during this time. Multiple companies like Indiabulls, Mankind, Lupin, etc have helped doctors set up such portals and reach out to patients too.
