Well, for an anime to lack any horror genre and have nothing in the category is almost unfair considering their brilliant presentation and storyline. But then you know, it's all about a good story, be it animated or live-action, romantic or thriller, Oscar-winning or sidelined, a good story is the purpose and aim of any movie or series.
‘Another’ is a great example of that, where we see a simple concept presented full of horror and thrill and keep us interested.

A Haven of Cruel Death
Well, human nature generally tells us to run away from death, but this anime is full of it. To an extent, that no one is safe. Although the death follows a pattern, it's very gruesome and might contain some disturbing imagery. So, if that's not your cup of tea, you might wanna pass on this one.
‘Another’ is basically a story of a ghost that haunts 9th-grade class 3. It is said that 26 years ago, a girl named Misaki mei died. There were many rumors on how she died, but everyone was devastated, unless someone said that she isn't dead and with us right here and then everyone died too as they didn't want to accept it.
When their class graduated, they saw someone who wasn't supposed to be there, someone no one knew yet never noticed. This marked the beginning of the curse of class 3 and the setting for the story.
Season Review
The story begins with Kouichi Sakakibara, a new transfer student of Yomiyama North Middle school, coming into 9th-grade class 3 and seeing an aloof girl sitting. He notices no student or teacher acknowledge her or even know someone like her. He talks to her and gets to know her name is Mistake Mei.
Kouichi also hears rumors about the Class 3 curse, which was, whenever the class is increased by one, students of the class or someone from their family die every month till the end of the year. As Kouichi was a transfer student, the class number was supposedly the same and the story revolves around finding who is the extra one, the one causing this curse and deaths.
The students of class 3 have found a way to deal with it, but everything changes when Kouichi is transferred. The story progresses quite interestingly, with a lot of episodes given to set the story up. It has 12 episodes, yet the story never seems to be rushing, and you always enjoy it to its core.
Characters You Will Love
Kouichi - He is the new transfer student that comes into Class 3 who is involved in the stories of deaths, ghosts, and curses. The story revolves around him, his views and you are always confused. He shows brilliant character development as the story progresses and decides to fight against the accepted fate. He is voiced by Atushi Abe.
Misaki - Misaki Mei is the female protagonist who always stays alone and is goofy. As per the legend, the girl who died also had the same name, so her character often invites the question- Is she dead or alive?. She is fun to watch and her reveal and powers are interesting. She is voiced by Natsumi Takamori.
Reiko Mikami - She is the aunt of Kouichi who is the assistant homeroom teacher of Class 9. Mikami sensei had not told anyone of being related to Kouichi and her character develops as she saves students and plays an important part in the plot. She is voiced by Naoko Sakakibara.
The Bottom Line
‘Another’ is a series, inspired by the book ‘Another’ that was released in 2009. And be it a book or series, this story just keeps you on your toes, always looking for more, and a slight pinch when you finish it. Its only vice is you'll end up thinking why isn't there more of it.
