About the Director
The director of this short film is also a woman who is trying to establish herself in the industry through her unique and noticeable work. Priyanka Banerjee has directed as well as written the movie with such great finesse.
She had been doing theatre since she was 17 and from there she got experience of writing and directing plays. At the age of 23, she has directed such renowned actors so well to get the exact content. She is the founder-CEO of Leo girl Productions. Moreover, she is also trying to show the harsh realities of the Indian Society through her artistic skills.
About the Movie
Leaving behind all the developmental scales and other set standards rape cases are rising with an unbeatable celerity. If we would have got such celerity of growth in any other sphere we were at some other heights. How shameful and cruel it is that in the wake of lust male members of the society are raping so impartially. You may wonder why I used the word ‘impartially’ here.
The answer is quite depressing. Today rapists are not so partial between an adult woman or a little innocent girl who isn't even able to recognize what has happened to her.
Proceeding on the same track the short film reflected an unusual sisterhood amongst all the rape victims. The duration of the film is as short as 13 minutes. But it has conveyed the reality with relevance. The film is quite popular as it stars many known and renowned actors like Kajol, Neha Dhupia, Shruti Hassan, Neena Kulkarni.
The film starts with ambiguity as initially, it is not clear what’s exactly going on in the scene. Initially, all the ladies from every sphere, class, caste, or genre are in the same room just doing their regular time pass activities. A room is full of hustle-bustle.
Suddenly, on the TV, which was still now ignored in the scene, a piece of news about a rape case grabs everyone’s attention. Then, a conversation bursts out and every person has to take part as nobody wants to sacrifice their comfort. Along With the vagueness, you can understand that it is about adding a new member to the same room.
But still, it is not clear why the wide range of women are living together in a room like that. The movie tilts towards the end and a moment clears everything when a little girl, holding a doll in her hands, enters the room.
The girl is also a rape victim whom they got to know from the news. Everyone is in tears. And they all welcomed her with a heavy heart. Actually, they were expecting an adult woman after hearing the news headlines. But it was something which was not anticipated. And now the viewers can actually understand that it is a room full of rape victims.
The title of the movie is ironically perfect. ‘Devi’ means a goddess. As in India, it is a belief that females are goddesses. But on the other hand, look how they are treated. The movie describes the disrespect and disgrace of a goddess done in a society where they have been given a crown of the goddess. Moreover, every woman acted so well and brought originality to the content.
The movie is produced by Neeranjan Iyer and Ryan Evan Stephen. A controversy arose regarding the content/story of the movie. Filmmaker Abhishek Rai accused the maker of Devi (Priyanka Banerjee) that the story or the idea is being stolen from his short film ‘Four’ that was released on the same platform a few years back. But Priyanka completely left it over to the audience to decide whether there is any sort of plagiarism or not.
The Bottom Line
The movie is absolutely watch-worthy and conveys a relevant message to the audience through hitting on their emotions. The movie got many positive comments from critics. It is also quite successful in commercial terms as it is seen and liked by many. You can easily watch this movie on youtube by just searching out the name itself.
