Plot Synopsis

In 2021, Kangana Ranaut starred in a film based on the life of India's actress-politician J. Jayalalitha. Anjayan Bala wrote a book called Thalaivi that served as inspiration for the film.  The cast of Thalaivi, a Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi film, is filled with popular and versatile actors.

Aravind Swami as MGR and Kangana Ranaut as Jaya have both delivered excellent performances. This movie tells both the story of Jaya's film journey and her political struggle. Screenplay and costumes evoke memories of celebrities of the past. This is a highly entertaining film in general.

Known for her political achievements, Jayalalithaa has been an iconic figure in Indian politics for decades. The film makes an accurate portrayal of her life. It captures the era of South Indian cinema when legends were on screen. The movie gives an account of the making of the film and technology during the ‘60s and ‘70s.

It showcases a beautiful relationship between Jaya and MGR. They enjoyed a relationship that didn't just benefit them individually but also benefited society as a whole. The third phase addresses her individual strength after MGR's death and her emergence as Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister

Movie Review

An extremely talented young woman who traveled all the way from Mysore to Madras to launch a career in film ruled the whole state for decades. It's amazing how life is unexpected. Jaya's unexpected journey is thrilling.

Kangana as Jaya is impossible to ignore throughout the movie. From being a naughty teenager to a responsible leader, Kangana portrays Jaya beautifully with her mannerisms and costumes. The performance of Arvind Swami as MGR is commendable. A good-hearted politician will also be respected by the youth today who are fed up with current politics.

Together, they share an extraordinary relationship, one that goes beyond all odds of society to help the needy.  A poignant love story is at the center of the film.

While they share the screen for a short time, Madhubala as Janaki (wife of MGR) and Bhagyashree as Sandhya (mother of Jaya) have given it they're all. Also worth mentioning is RMV where the character is played by Samuthirakani and Raj Arjun in different languages which mirrors the precision of the director's casting.

The casting of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi shows that every detail has been considered. This movie narrates many political milestones very well. It seems to be ending fast as it gains interest. Movies have a deeper meaning than mere entertainment. Certainly, it makes us more mindful of a woman warrior for a couple of days.

 Famous Quotes

“Agar tum janta ko pyaar doge, toh wo bhi pyaar denge”

This is a famous saying that MGR always tells Jaya- “If you love people, the people will love you”.

“Madam Prime minister if you give an ounce to Tamil Nadu, it will give you back a pound”.

“Kyuki Mahabharat ka dusra naam hai Jaya”

When Jaya claims that she will retaliate against her humiliation in the state assembly, she uses this dialogue.

“Ek baat yaad rakhna. Agar mujhe maa samjhoge to mere dil me jagah milegi, aur agar mujhe sirf ek aurat samjhoge to me...”

She overpowers the male-dominated politics in the last scene of the movie, claiming to be respected as a mother and not regarded as a mere woman.

The Bottom Line

Regardless of the life narrated, biopics are always inspiring. Take it from me, if it is a biopic of a legend, do not miss it. Even if politics is not your cup of tea, don't miss this chance to watch the movie in a language that you are most comfortable with.

You can watch this movie on Amazon Prime.

My ratings of the movie - 4.5 on 5
