Series Review
There are hardly any kdrama fans who haven’t watched Goblin. Descendants Of The Sun (another highly recommended drama) ruled the kdrama world as the most popular drama when it came out. But with the release of Goblin, DOTS had to surrender its place. And the drama is every bit worth the praise. The cinematography and the soundtracks are just flawless along with a plot that isn’t like any other cliched story.
After watching Goblin, you’ll not only fall in love with the story but also the main actors and actresses (if you weren’t already a fan of them). The casting of this drama is beyond perfect, showing off their acting abilities to the max. All the actors completely molded themselves into the characters they played which only increased theirs as well as their character’s charm a hundredfold.
Goblin is the ultimate blend of different genres. It’s modern-historical, has comedy, romance, mystical beings, and some tragedy too (the tragedy might be a little more than “some”). One of the things that make you fall head over heels is the relationship between the Goblin (Gong Yoo) and the Grim Reaper (Lee Dong-Wook). Seeing these immortal beings who’re hundreds of years old acting like teenagers was sometimes more satisfying to watch than the main couples.
The world-building is very intricate and elaborate. The plot moves back and forth between two timelines- the past when everything started and the present when everything is bound to finally end. Some things are bound to go off track when dealing with multiple timelines but the writing of Goblin is very consistent and all the events of both timelines match perfectly and come full circle in the end.
From the beginning, there’s this sense of impending tragedy because the first thing we’re told indicates that this story might actually not have a happy ending. And knowing this, a lot of the scenes become all the more heart-wrenching, and a lot of the time it seems that the final goodbye is near. But I assure all the first-time viewers who might be hesitating to watch it that it does, in fact, have a happy ending.
Another appealing point of Goblin is its soundtracks. The OSTs of this drama are some of the best. They perfectly fit the emotional atmosphere and paired with the poetic dialogues, the impact on the viewers’ hearts is doubled. The song I liked most was Beautiful by Crush. The opening song was so popular with the viewers that it was made into a full-length song- Round and Round.
The Bottom Line
Overall, it's perfect in my opinion. I’ve got no complaints whatsoever. It's a beautiful drama that’ll affect you deeply and leave you with a lot of lingering feelings. After all, its specialty is to pull in its viewers and hold them captive for a long time. If you feel unsatisfied with Lee Dong-Wook and Yoo In-na’s tragic fate in the drama, then Touch Your Heart starring the two actors might heal your broken heart.
