Vaidehi wrote a short story titled Shakunthaleyondige Kaleda Aparahna that forms the basis for the drama. A modern Kannada language fiction writer, Janaki Srinivasa Murthy is known by the pen name, Vaidehi. She completed her undergraduate studies in Commerce at the Bhandarkar College in Kundapura.

In addition to being a recipient of numerous national and state literary awards, Vaidehi is one of the most successful female writers in the language. Her collection of short stories, Krauncha Pakshigalu, won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2009. Shakunthala is performed by Seetha Kote, a well-known Kannada actress, and dancer. The play has seen over 25 performances and there are still more to come.

Psychological Analysis

In many ways, Shakunthala is like every other woman her age. As she relates the events of her life, she is filled with emotion. From her childhood to the day when she loses her last hope when Dushyanta takes her son along with him, every part of her life is covered in the play.

She relates the emotions every woman experiences during her teenage years at the beginning of the play. In this character, every bit of nature makes her happy. In the next section, she describes how Dushyantha came into her life. It is in this section that she describes how happy she is to have him in her life.

During the intense moments she is having with him, she is doubtful for the first time. She wonders if she can trust him. Even though Dushyantha no longer remembers her, she remains grounded nonetheless. Shakunthala raises her son to her best, showing that whatever a woman goes through, a mother gives her best to her child.

When Dushyantha reappears in her life, she is mature and wise beyond her years. Her maturity shows that she has grown through her experiences. There is nothing she can't handle anymore. She accepts all aspects of life as they are. During Shakunthala, the phases are similar to those of Sitha just before she enters the Earth at the end of Ramayana

Famous Quote

“I became my own guru, I became my own disciple. Child Sarvadaman was born. Did the pain disappear? Nothing disappears just by wishing. Maybe it is reduced, maybe it is hidden deep down within my mind. What I thought I had suppressed deep down came up again. The same pain emerged. It had come along with bright moonlight. Dushyant had come”

It is these words that she utters at the end of the play after she has already narrated her entire life.  It is through speaking of her relationship with Dushyantha that she shares the pain he has brought to her. She describes how we tend to forget the past over time, but one thought can set off a chain of events.

The Bottom Line

Even though a single performer enacts the entire play, dialogues bring many characters to life. In addition to the precise direction, every prop is used in a very intuitive manner to convey emotions.

Drama is a beautiful thing in that it is enjoyed live. Live performances evoke the emotions of the audience. So you should never miss watching at least one live performance during your lifetime. Additionally, this keeps your memory fresh as they cannot be viewed whenever needed, as opposed to other genres.

My ratings for the drama - 4 on 5
