Nikita Hora

Our life is governed by law and it's a very respectful profession. It takes immense hard work to become a lawyer.

Each word that you speak becomes meaningful. It makes a person feel more confident as while studying law one gets an edge to analyse a situation in a rational and logical way.

Secondly, it is extremely important to understand that along with legal knowledge it is important to learn from senior's experiences.

Nothing in this world is free so to learn and know about seniors professional experiences  one needs to work very hard and be a part of his/her team.

1.Tell us about your background and journey.

I am a lawyer and have joined by father's business few years back. While doing graduation I was fortunate to attend a course at Oxford University on International Human right in Business thereafter I studied entrepreneurship at Stanford University.

After completing law I had plans to go to United States for LLM (my application was accepted  by few Universities in U.S) however I decided to take a legal job. Then destiny made its own way and I joined my father's coal trading and logistics business.

Nothing would have been better for a daughter joining her father's business and being the first female entering coal trading and logistics business. Initially alot of people demotivated however I am extremely blessed to have a very supportive mother who is my biggest strength.

Whenever things got extremely difficult my mother has always been my source of motivation and true inspiration and today also she makes sure that I work passionately. My elder sibling has also been my guiding light too.

2. What do you think are the key differences in studying law in India and other countries?

I did my law from O.P Jindal University. Honestly, the teaching pattern of the Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) was similar of any other international University. Whether in India or at international University I have been always a part of interactive class where students participation and opinions were given importance.

Additionally, approaching my professors and taking guidance has been always an option for me which I believe is very important for a student. At international University's professors are very approachable and are openly interacting with students about their career goal  which help students to shape up their careers and gives students to new way to think.

3. Which top institutes would you recommend for studying law?

I am not sure if I will be comfortable in mentioning any particular institute's name.I believe if a student is passionate then he/she knows the best part about his/her institution and how the institution can help them grow and support them to achieve success.

Coming to the college I graduated, I could have not asked for  more that JGLS has given me and shaping up my professional goals.

4. What advice would you pass on to someone who wants to be a lawyer?

Our life is governed by law and it's a very respectful profession. It takes immense hard work to become a lawyer. Each word that you speak becomes meaningful. It makes a person feel more confident as while studying law one gets an edge to analyse a situation in a rational and logical way.

Secondly, it is extremely important to understand that along with legal knowledge it is important to learn from senior's experiences. Nothing in this world is free so to learn and know about seniors professional experiences  one needs to work very hard and be a part of his/her team.

5. What are the various career scopes after being a lawyer?

The way start- ups are successfully making its presence in India ,the scope for lawyers have increased drastically. Now legal professionals are not only restricted to court or working in the law firms or in house counsel.

Legal professional can also enter into the world legal journalism, research work, can have their own legal start-up, can join LPO. There is great scope in the area of legal academics.

Furthermore, they can join their family business or start their own business as being a lawyer always gives you an edge as you are aware of legal precautions to be taken and negotiation skill is sharpened to deal with investors or any other party associated with your business.

6. What does success look like to you in this job?

I am extremely lucky that my father is my boss and mentor and my mother is the pillar of my strength and confidence.  To me success is when I get to hear that I am like my father.

Furthermore my mother has taught me that in any business, team business associates play a very important role. Therefore, if they are performing efficiently and are satisfied working with my work that is what I call it a success.

7. Which is your favourite book and why?

Think and grow rich by Napoleon Hill. The book motivates me to work smartly and change the mind set of how success can be achieved.
I don't read novels at all.
