Padma Shri Dr. Kalpana Saroj: First Female Entrepreneur of India

Everyone has not been fortunate since birth, But life always gives a chance to decide and rewrite destiny.

A person just requires to not miss the chance.

We're gonna talk about the real life story of a woman who was born in a family which was never accepted by the society.

A woman who spent her childhood in slums, a woman whose childhood was not less than a  nightmare.

But still she managed to be awarded with one of the greatest honour of the country.

Her life was never fair to her but still she is an inspiration for all of us.

Kalpana Saroj, an entrepreneur and a Tedx speaker is the chairperson of The Kamini Tubes in Mumbai.

Her Childhood Not Less Than a Nightmare

When Was Kalpana Saroj Born

1961.

How Old is Kalpana Saroj?

61.

Kalpana Saroj was born in a small village called Roperkheda in Maharashtra in 1961.

She was a Marathi Buddhist by religion. Her father was a constable by profession.

She had always been eager to learn but she always faced discrimination in school by the teachers and fellow students.

Being the eldest daughter in a poor dalit family, She was married at a very young age of 12.

She was sent to live in poor slum areas of Mumbai with her husband and her in-laws.

At the age of 12, she was forced to do all the household chores in a family of 12- 13 people.

Victim of Social Evils

She was not just a victim of caste discrimination and child marriage, but she also faced physical abuse.

Infact,  just after about 6 months of her marriage, her condition was so miserable that her father got her back.

But, because of her being from a lower caste and was living with her parents after marriage, society looked at her with shame and disgust, they always tortured her mentally with their taunts.

Conditions took such a bad turn, like every other story, the time for climax arrived, instead of taking all those tortures, she decided to end her life. She tried to commit suicide.

Every End is a New Beginning

But this was not the end, this was the beginning. A beginning of a new life, where she was not weak, but strong enough to face the challenges of the world. She was ready to fight for herself. She was ready to live a new life.

When she got consciousness, she was a totally different person by heart, mind and by soul.

She was strong, challenging, dedicated and full of life. This was the time when life gave her the chance to rewrite her destiny, to reframe herself, and she understood the opportunity and took the chance.

She decided to live with her uncle, and started to work as an assistant tailor in a garment factory.

Within no time, she was promoted to senior post and her salary increased due to her hard work and dedication.

Everything started to move smoothly, life was back on track, when an unexpected misfortune happened.

Due to inability to pay for her sister's treatment, she lost her. This time, she learnt the importance of money in life.

She decided to work to earn more and more money now. She got a loan from the Government because of the  scheme for dalits.

Turning Point in Her Life As an Entrepreneur

With that money, she started a venture by installing some sewing machines and working about sixteen hours a day.

The venture proved beneficial. With the profit, she initiated a new furniture business alongside the tailoring business.

Everything was going so well. She was getting profits from everywhere, when a person tried to sell her a piece of land that was caught in legal issues.

She took the risk, purchased the land, fought the legal battle and became the owner of the land.

With that, She started her real estate business.

The workers of a metal engineering company- Kamani tubes approached her to settle the debts of the company with her entrepreneurship skills.

She took the risk again and with her efforts, she is now the chairperson of Kamani Tubes.

Personal Life of Kalpana Saroj Now

She started her life again not just professionally but personally as well.

She Married Samir Saroj in 1980 at the age of 22 but he died in 1989.

She has a son named Amar Saroj and a daughter named Seema Saroj.

Currently she is married to Shubhkaran.

Currently, she owns about $112 Million. She has been awarded with a number of awards including the Padma Shri in 2013.

She is now a source of motivation for all those youngsters who give up very easily.

One thing I learnt from her life is that, We should never be afraid of taking risks. Because these risks can prove to be a turning point in our life.

So, we should always remember that despite having hardships, We should focus on the aim and work to achieve that.
