The money atomized society has laid on our doors a vicious cycle of dishonesty and corruption. With its roots penetrated deeply for decades now, corruption continues to grow. When there is an abuse of power for personal and monetary gain, corruption creeps in. In India, you will witness this illegal practice at a lot of stages.

The Corruption Perception Index (CPI) analyses corruption levels in 180 countries to date. It ranked India at the 81st position, showing the height of corruption being practiced here.  This is affecting the overall image of the country, the economy as well as leading to a drastic fall in development. But what is causing so much corruption?

There are a lot of reasons for the cause of corruption in India. Here are a few -

A Dearth of Proper Management

When management would not be effective, there would be loopholes in the administration leading to unnecessary wasting of money and time. Improper management rises because of the wrong way of appointment of workers in the administration.

It has happened several times that people are promoted or selected for a job by giving bribes. The fact that unqualified people have been placed at high positions is leading to inefficiency.

In fact, in some cases, the authorities who are concerned about policing such practices are also corrupt. Their hands get tied when heavy bribes are given to them. The lack of supervision in various levels of administration gives rise to corruption, first at a lower scale and eventually at a higher scale.

Instability in the Economic Condition of India

The coronavirus pandemic has led to a terrible economic crisis which is leading to inflation and unemployment. The collapse of businesses and people losing their jobs has created a sense of fear in the minds of people. To keep their future safe, people have been driven into illegal practices.

They feel like they are compelled to take bribes to remain financially stable always. Due to changes in policies of the government, high inflation, and abrupt handling of the pandemic, the real income of people took a deep fall. This led them into taking shortcuts of earning some money.

No Self-Conscience and Values

Honesty is said to be folly practice these days. It is only honesty that can prevent corruption from rising further. When you commit a crime, your inner conscience denies you to do it because deep down you know, that it is wrong. The feeling is suppressed by the dire need for money.

Values are groomed in people right from their childhood. Schools and families are the first ones to sow the seeds of moral values. However, these days, the parents are themselves involved in corrupt practices which give wrong lessons to their children. Educational institutions should lay importance on subjects like Moral Science to develop healthy values in children.

Politics and Elections

Politicians are hungry for votes and power. To gain these, they go up to any extent without thinking what this might lead to. When elections begin, corruption spreads as a babble spreads in the youth. Politicians give bribes to the illiterate and poor to get votes.

A lot of private institutions provide funds to politicians in exchange for their fame and publicity. They seek personal favors after meeting the heavy costs of campaigning in elections and ultimately encourage corruption.

The Domino Effect

If corruption takes place at any level, it affects the other levels of administration too. For example, if a person is compelled to bribe someone in the name of a necessary fee and that person does not have enough money, he/she will have to take a loan. Lending money from banks comes with paying back at high-interest rates.

So, to escape paying such high amounts of interest rates, anyone would lean towards easily earning money and this leads to corruption. Eventually, that person will take bribes and the people who bribed him will choose an immoral practice as well to recover their loss.

Are You Involved Too?

It is like a domino effect, if one is affected, the one following him/her gets affected too. Unless all of us are not determined to fight against this, corruption will keep expanding its grab and drive the nation towards an unhealthy administration.

To save time and escape from the exertion of long processes of documentation, most of us lean towards giving away extra money. You try to find an easy way out. So when you are asked for that extra money in name of a compulsory fee, you give away an extra amount not knowing that it is a bribe.

Even officials are tempted to take illegal money because often, the funds they receive from the upper level do not seem to be enough to meet the demand. They would not want to cover that amount from their pockets and so, bribes seem rational.

Therefore, corruption has reached deeply into the roots of the nation, and to eradicate it, the entire administration must take a stand to bring changes and fight against this evil.
