Emergency 1975: Black Day for Indian Democracy

25 June 1975 is a memorable date but why? On 25 June 1975 emergency was declared by President Fakhreddin Ali Ahmed on the recommendation of Indira Gandhi. 25 June 2022 marks the 47th anniversary of the emergency, a historically relevant phase in India’s years. Emergency started on 25 June 1975 to 21 March 1977. This is one of the most debated topics. This topic is also mentioned in the books of the 12 class.

Indira Gandhi was the first woman prime minister of India. But the decision taken by Indira Gandhi is known as one of the darkest phases of independent India. The reason is that in this period unbridled state incarnation, stifling of dissent, and a government crackdown on civil liberties. It also puts a censor and stops the media. It was a violation of fundamental rights.

Article 352 of the Indian constitution says that the President of India can declare a national emergency if the security of the nation is at stake and is in danger by either war, external aggression, or internal disturbance / armed rebellion.

Reasons behind the Emergency in the Country

On June 12, 1975, Allahabad High Court ordered that Indira Gandhi has found of Electoral malpractices, and debarring her from any elected post is one of the major reasons for the emergency. Indira Gandhi won the 1971 Lok Sabha election from Rae Bareli defeating Raj Nairn in Uttar Pradesh. Later, Raj Nairn challenged Indira Gandhi for electoral malpractices in the election and violation of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

She gets help from a government official for election-related work and election promotion. She also gets banned for 6 years for holding any electoral post. Besides this, Indira Gandhi appealed in the Supreme Court and continued in office as the prime minister of India. Jp holds many protests for removing Indira Gandhi from office. He also held a rally in Delhi’s Ram Lila Maidan on 25 June.

Jay Prakash Narayan, also known as JP, was a leader and social activist in Bihar. He was totally against corruption and when he gets to know that Indira Gandhi won elections by electoral malpractices, JP files a case against her.  In April 1974 JP raised the voice for total revolution with the help of students, peasants, and workers by non-violence in Patna.

Things Done By Government In Emergency

During the Emergency, Indira Gandhi put the opposite leader in jail, suspended all fundamental rights of citizens, and also started censorship of the media. Congress supports their argument by saying that the war between India and Pakistan ended recently. Some other parties opposed the emergency but some people like the chief minister of West Bengal Siddhartha Shankar Ray supported Indira Gandhi for this step. Son of Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi was in support of this step.

The power supply of media houses and newspapers of Delhi is stopped by the government of India, so no news can get out. The emergency in India was announced on All India Radio by Indira Gandhi the next morning. Almost 1 lakh people are arrested for going against and raising their voices against Indira Gandhi.

Because of the terror of Indira Gandhi, many activists and leaders went underground. The state election was stopped because of an emergency. The government also put restrictions on trade union activity, stakes by workers, and imposed the fished wages also with no scope of bonus.

Political leaders and activists like Vijaya Raje Scindia, Jay Prakash Narayan, raj nearing, korai desi, char Singh and many others were immediately arrested. After the removal of the emergency looks Sabha elections were held again but this time Indira Gandhi lost and another party congress came to power.

On Twitter, Amit Shah said that –the emergency imposed to quell the voices against one family is a dark chapter in the history of independent India. Salute to the sacrifice of all the countrymen who fought relentlessly for the protection of the constitution and democratization of the country while suffering the brutal tortures of the ruthless rule for 21 months.

On this day in 1975, congress killed the world’s largest democracy by imposing an emergency on the country in the selfishness and arrogance of power. Innumerable satyagrahis were imprisoned overnight and the press was locked. Taking away the fundamental rights of the citizens, made the Parliament and the court mute spectators.
