Friends, the American T.V. sitcom became a hugely popular show not just in America but internationally. It has been nominated sixty times for an Emmy and won six of them. The relatability of the show is showing high that the adults even of this era connect to it. It is the first choice of everyone who is in doubt about what to watch. It never misses a beat to make the audience laugh.
Rachel’s fashion, Chandler’s sarcasm, Monica’s cleanliness, Joey’s goofiness, Phoebe’s efforts and Ross’s intelligence is what made Friends the only show where the six characters could shine and make each other stand out. They were not only friends for the show but also supported each other behind the scenes. The way they blend into each other makes us feel no difference whether we are watching one or six of them.
1. Hilarious characters: Twenty years later, and yet the characters of the series are the best you’ll ever find. They not only make you laugh but their lives are comparable to ours. They do not have perfect lives and are trying to figure out their careers, marriage, and passion just like us. They feel close to us, and we also have friends in our group who are like them. One who is charming, a sarcastic one, a fashionista, a hygiene freak, a singer/music lover and an intelligent guy/girl – you may find one or all of them in a single group.
2. Never old: It would be impossible for you to settle for a show that you’ve already watched, watch reruns and still be amazed how many times can you laugh at the same joke. You would find the jokes funny no matter the innumerable times you’ve seen them. You will never feel the requirement to not watch it.
3. Relatable: Every artist present today is trying to find the relatability factor because that’s how the audience feels connected to you and if the audience feels connected then they show you with the love and support you cannot expect. Friends has done that and shown us how to do it. People, especially the adults could connect to the series like no other and now even the adults then but now as in 2022 as well. The problems shown are real-life problems and not just a creation of fiction.
4. Friends can be different: The most basic theme of most shows related to friendships are friends from working space or childhood friends or college friends. Even though we do not know about the history of their friendships, it can be said that they couldn’t have been different. A palaeontologist, a chef, an actor, an accountant, a masseuse and an executive are shown as close friends signifying that there is no requirement to be friends. They couldn’t have been more different.
5. No plans to go with: Some of the best plot lines were not planned by the characters to happen. Ross and Rachel having a daughter, Monica and Chandler getting married, and Rachel running away from marriage are the best-unplanned events. And that is what we could connect to it in real life as many of us face situations which are not invited but the beauty of it is to embrace those circumstances and stand tall facing them.
6. Can't-miss the theme song: The theme song was written by David Crane, Marta Kauffman, Michael Skloff, Danny Wilde composed by Allee Willis, and Michael Skloff still remains one of the iconic songs for a television show. I’ll be there for you is widely popular and is still stuck in our heads fifteen years later.
7. Lessons to learn: With amazingly hilarious episodes, the friends’ episode ends with us taking home a life lesson. They not only entertain us but provide us with valuable insights about living your life your own way. The best among them is surely Ross teaching us how to get tanned.
The show ended but has left behind its legacy. It is a cult classic, and we do not see it getting down on the list. Its raw depiction of the life of an adult has made it relatable to every adult around the globe. Because no matter where you live you have to find a job, look for an apartment, workplace issues, and face the struggles of following your passion – issues are all the same.
