Since the day they received their Aadhaar, people have been wondering whether it is necessary or not. There is a great deal of ambiguity, and Indian courts have issued several rulings both in favor of and against the requirement of Aadhar to access numerous services and grants.
Identity verification is now required in many situations, including when booking a hotel, flight, or train. The Aadhar card has recently become more important due to the demographic and biometric information, even though there are many other options for proving your identity.
Aadhaar: Is It Mandatory?
In a decision, the Supreme Court of India made it abundantly clear that the Indian government cannot make the Aadhar card mandatory as of right now. Aadhaar cards may be required in some circumstances, such as when opening a bank account, filing an IT return, verifying a mobile number, or applying for a PAN number.
To prevent corruption and misuse of funds, Aadhar is now required for the majority of government programs following numerous legal battles. Today, recipients of a variety of government programs are required to provide their Aadhar numbers to verify their eligibility. Most benefits are paid directly into recipients' bank accounts that are connected to their Aadhar cards.
The Project for Aadhaar Cards
The Indian Government, in coordination with UIDAI, began the project to provide each resident of India with an identity in March 2006. The Indian government introduced this card to give each Indian citizen a distinct social identity. As a result, the UIDAI under the Aadhaar project issued this card, also known as a UID card. This card serves multiple purposes and is accepted everywhere in India. Aadhar cards have reportedly been distributed to Indian citizens in the amount of 1.12 billion.
Why Should Aadhaar Be Made Mandatory?
1. It is a single document that can serve as address proof, identity proof, and age proof, and it is a form of identity proof that is universally accepted.
2. If you want to receive direct benefits under the DBT scheme, a connection or reservation for LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is required.
3. For many admissions applications, including NEET and university admissions, Aadhar is a requirement.
4. For PDS schemes to be eligible for ration and kerosene subsidies, Aadhaar is a requirement.
5. Pensioners must have an Aadhaar.
6. The use of an Aadhar is required to open savings bank accounts.
7. Internet and mobile connections require an Aadhar card.
8. The use of an Aadhar card is now required for death registration. The UIDAI will be assisted in deactivating the Aadhaar and preventing its abuse.
9. Making the Aadhar card necessary for EPF transfers, withdrawals, and other uses.
10. Applications or renewals for passports now require an Aadhar card.
11. Additionally, NRIs must have it in their bank accounts.
12. Currently, providing an Aadhaar as identification documentation is optional but not required for marriage registration.
The role of government in the social sector would be qualitatively changed by Aadhaar. India's social security system will be expanded because of the UID project, which also aims to ensure accurate targeting. According to the UIDAI, UID would enable the government to convert several indirect benefits into direct benefits. Let's hope that Aadhaar will accomplish what it was designed to do. "Aadhaar" is supposed to be used by millions of people.
Until now, a person receiving benefits under different government-sponsored programs has had to repeatedly prove his identity and eligibility by producing various documents for inspection. Several authorities check these documents for authenticity.
