Shoot Out at Wadala (2013) - Storyline and Cast

Introduction

Since 1980 over 800 encounters and more than 1000 gangsters have been killed. This is the movie review of the movie ‘Shootout At Wadala’ which was released on 1st May 2013. The movie depicts to its viewers the thrilling underworld and Bombay police relationship. This movie is exclusively based on the story of an innocent youth being arrested for a false case and ultimately becoming a big gangster.

A Glimpse of the Storyline

I won't tell the entire storyline but a little information is necessary. The movie starts with the exam scene and depicts the love between Manohar Surve and Vidya for the first few minutes of the film. Manohar was arrested by inspector Ambodkar for a crime that he hadn't done. Later it is shown that Ambedkar was bribed to arrest and put in prison. That event was the turning point in Manohar’s life. His brother is murdered in the prison. He learns to kill, and fight and is a completely changed person. He runs out of the jail along with Munir and they form their gang. Their gang consists of- Manya Surve, Sheikh Munir, Gyancho, Jamal, and Veera. This gang competes with other gangs and becomes the most wanted gang in the city of Mumbai.

Before them, it was the Mastan gang who were dominating the city with their terrorist activities and the incident of a rape done by Yakub Lala and Sayed Batla on the 23rd of June 1978 is narrated in the film. On 27th June 1978, three inspectors arrested Yakub. On 24th November 1979, Manya and Munir escaped prison. Batla threatens inspector Afaaque in a very smart way and ends up getting arrested. They both are beaten by the police and the woman they had raped earlier. Manya is no more scared of anyone, or the police.

Sadik who was a friend of the police and Dilawar & Zubair are hurt by Batla & Yakub who had escaped prison. He has been admitted to J.J. hospital Bombay. The war between Dilawaar & Zubair and the Mastans and later between Dilawaar & Zubair and Manya’s gang is depicted very well.  The police get permission to encounter Manya and they plan very well by taking help from Jamal & Vidya, both of them weren’t aware of the police master plan. On 11th January 1982, police encountered Manya at Ambedkar college, Wadala, Bombay, and killed him.

Performance Analysis of Casts in the Movie

Each character has played their role to the ultimate they could. The movie revolves around the main character Manya Surve(role played by John Abraham). John has done a good job. He has smartly transitioned himself from an innocent Manohar to Don Manya Surve, from a person who used to be scared of copying in exams to a person who was not afraid of the police.

He bravely depicts the rise and fall of Manya Surve by fighting all the odds as shown in the film. The movie does not tell a lot about Sheikh Munir(the role was played by Tushir Kapoor). He is shown as a person who motivated Manya and was the first person to become part of the Manya’a gang. Tushar also plays a good role. Munir was killed a year later(after Manya) in another encounter. The other gang members are-

Gyancho- Role played by Siddhanth Kapoor. He is a sharpshooter on the team.

Jamal- Role played by Karan Patel. He is initially somebody’s bodyguard, then he joins the Manya gang. In the end, the police smartly take his help to find Manya.

Veera-  Role played by Sanjeev Chadha. He trains Manya in jail to become a strong person.

Manoj Bajpayee and Sonu Soodshave played the roles of Zubair and Dilawaar. They pretend to be close to the police. Zubair gets killed and Dilaawar tries to take revenge but fails many times as shown in the film. Both Manoj and Sonu have done a great job together. Raju Mavani and Pankaj Kabia played the roles of Yakub Lala and Sayed Batla. They are part of the Mastan gang. They are shown in the incidents of rape, murder, threatening the police in different ways, etc.

The second main character is inspector Afaaque (role played by Anil Kapoor). Anil does a good job. He smartly traces Manya Surve and leads his team to an encounter. I guess no actor other than Anil Kapoor could have played this role any better. Ronit Roy plays the character inspector Ambat. He is depicted as someone rude and bold just like Anil Kapoor. Ronit was a perfect match for the role.

Mahesh Manhraker plays the role of inspector Bhende. He is someone who is depicted as a little lazy and has contact with Zubair and Dilaawar. Raju Kher plays the role of inspector Ambedkar. He is shown as someone corrupt. All these inspectors had a two-star, but they are very different from each other.

The other actors include- Chetan Hansraj(who was the dangerous jailer: Potya), Kangana Ranaut(Manya’s girlfriend: Vidya), Soni Razdan(Manya’s mother), Gargi Patel(Vidya’s mother), Vineet Sharma(Bhargav Sharma-Manya’s brother), Arif Zakaria(Sadik), Sangeeta Khanayat(Raped woman), Randheer Rai(murdered husband) and Jaswinder Gardener(Ambat’s wife). There is a surprise entry of Souphiya Chaudhary, Priyanka Chopra, and Sunny Leone in three different songs. Most of the actors mentioned in this paragraph have very few appearances throughout the movie.

How the Movie Performed at the Box Office?

The movie has managed very well to portray the story of the Bombay police’s first encounter which took place on 11th January 1982 at Ambedkar college, Wadala, Bombay. The film earned around ₹101.9 million (US$1.3 million) on its first day. The movie misses certain aspects. It could have given a little information about the rise of the Mastan gang and also Dilaawar & Zubair. The movie might have exaggerated certain aspects. The movie also tells about the negative side of the police system such as bribery and strident laws.
