The movie brilliantly portrays the life of a character named ‘Lal Singh Chaadha’ from his childhood to adulthood. The film was released on 11th August 2022. It was directed by Advait Chandan and produced by Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, Jyothi Deshpande, and Ajit Andhare. The movie turned out to become a flop even though it took several years for the film to come out.
Introduction
The movie begins with a beautiful
song. Lal starts interacting with the people seated in the same compartment.
He connects his talk to his shoes, his ancestors who died during previous wars, his first day at school, his life with his mother & Rupa, his college life, his career as a soldier, his time as a businessman, and his later life as a family man. There is a link between the childhood of Lal and the last scene of the movie.
Positive
Aspects of the Film
There are a few aspects of the film that attract me the most. The movie begins with a dialogue from Aamir Khan “Meri maa kehti thi ki zindagi golguppe jaisi hoti hai, peyt balai par jave mun nahi parta”. This dialogue is repeated around two-three times in the film and is one of my favorite dialogues from the film.
Another dialogue that touched me is when Muhammad Paji says “Khuda ek taraf, Khuda ko samjanewala ek taraf. Hum bewakuf kya soch kar khude teh”. The third dialogue that I loved was when Aamir Khan says “ Mazhab se kabhi malaria pheltha hain”.
These three dialogues carry a lot of meaning. They speak about the essence of life and the impact of negative religious beliefs. There is a scene in which Lal is attacked by the bullies, Rupa tells him to run and Lal starts running. It is at that time while running his crutches come out and he can run normally. This scene is very touching and the inclusion of the background music increases its emotional depth.
Analysis
of the Film
The movie is in a narrative form in which the protagonist ‘Aamir Khan’ who is playing the role of ‘Lal Singh Chaadha’ narrates his life story in a sequence. The movie is filled with several twists in the storyline.
The first twist is when Lal is set free from his crutches while running away from the bullies. The second twist is when Rupa moves in and stays with Lal’s family. The third twist is when Rupa & Lal move in different paths to follow their passion.
The fourth twist and turn is when Rupa returns home but after a few days, she is arrested by the police. The final twist is when Lal meets Rupa after many years and learns that he has become a father.
Real Life Events
Though the film is fictional, it includes several real-life events such as the 1983 world cup, operation blue star which began on June 1st, 1984 & continued for a few days, the assassination of Indira Gandhi by two of her Sikh bodyguards, the attacks back on the Sikhs and finally the Kargil war.
As a matter of fiction, he also tells how ‘Shahrukh Khan’ was inspired by Lal’s dance during their young age. This movie is a remake of the Oscar-winning Hollywood film ‘Forrest Gump’. ‘Forrest Gump’ was released on 6th July 1994 in the U.S.A., ‘Forrest Gump’ won six Oscars, including Best Actor in the leading role, Best Picture, and Best Director awards.
The film very beautifully explains how true love lasts forever and how the promotion of one’s religion for publicity & fame can lead to violence.
The song at the beginning of the film, the song that describes Rupa & Lal’s friendship growth, the background music at each part of the film, and other songs in the film increase the viewer's interest in watching the film. The genre of the film is Romance/ Drama. It is a very good family film.
Characters
The character ‘Lal Singh Chaadha’ was played by Ahmad Bin Umar(small) & Aamir Khan(adult). They have done well to depict their roles. The character ‘Rupa Dsouza’ was played by Hafsa Ashraf(small) & Kareena Kapoor. This is Kareena's third film with Aamir Khan after 3 Idiots (2008) and Talaash(2012).
The character ‘Bala’ is played by Naga Chaitanya. He is a South Indian actor and does well to portray the character that he plays. The character ‘Lal’s mom’ is played by Mona Singh. She seems to play a key role along with Rupa in molding the young Lal and she does it well. She was also there in the 3 Idiots movie. The character of ‘Mohammad’ is played by Manav Vij.
The makers have molded him very well to make him look as they have displayed him. I have seen him in the movie ‘Phillauri’. The character of that person sitting in front of Lal on the train is played by ‘Aarya Sharma’.
She doesn't have a big role other than being a listener. Yet she has a key role in the film. There is also a surprise entry of Shahrukh Khan in the film.
Negative
Aspects of the Film
The film failed to create an impact on its viewers. This film was exposed to online hating and trolling. Just before the film’s release, some hashtags ordered people to not watch the film.
A video showed a man standing in front of a multiplex with a megaphone ‘requesting’ people to boycott the film. Even though the film took several years for its production and release, it has failed to impress the audience.
This film was Aamir Khan’s labor of love. The first idea for the film was hatched when actor ‘Atul Kulkarni’ suggested an Indian adaptation of ‘Forrest Gump’ to Aamir Khan in 2008.
Final Remarks
I would like to conclude by putting forward the fact that even though this film was a flop and people wanted to boycott it due to reasons not known. It still conveys important messages and therefore this film is a must-watch.
