The hourglass figure is one of four traditional female body shapes described by the fashion industry. The other shapes are the rectangular, inverted triangle, and spoon/pear.
The hourglass shape is defined by a woman's body measurements- the circumference of the bust, waist and hips. Hourglass body shapes have a wide bust, a narrow waist, and wide hips with a similar measurement to that of the bust.
This body shape is named for its resemblance to that of an hourglass where the upper and lower half are wide and roughly equal while the middle is narrow in circumference, making the overall shape wide-narrow-wide.
Women who exhibit the hourglass figure are more admired, which can put pressure on women whose body shapes are noticeably different to strive to achieve the hourglass figure.
This can lead to body dissatisfaction which can cause eating disorders in young women from all over the globe.
Short Story - A Personal POV
You might think being in shape is the best thing that can happen to a woman, but that's not my experience! Don't get me wrong, it's nice to have a small waist, the problem is, is not always good to have a big but big breasts.
Let’s be honest, getting attention from creepy guys starting as soon as age 12 is not something comfortable. My body was fully developed before I was mature enough to deal with a body that was calling too much-unwanted attention.
My immediate response of course would be to cover myself as much as possible which made me look fat and think about losing weight when I was actually in a healthy weight.
I would also feel humiliated comparing myself with girls with rectangular bodies with an elegant form no matter if the clothing was bag or tight.
Whenever I would try to dress with something with cleavage and something tight around the waste (which is the clothing advised for my body type) I would feel bad as I looked like an attention-seeker and instead of getting attention from the cute boys that were my age, I would get attention from creepers (a friend from my father, an uncle's friend or the kitchen worker from school which obviously was not the attention I was seeking for).
Guys my age would not care about my existence, they would perceive me as something outside, like I was a teacher or someone who is not part of the circle of options. Each and every year I would just cover myself more and more or use less feminine looks so as not to attract disgusting old guys.
I would also get in and outside of diets hoping to lose hips and chest… I would just feel frustrated for never having my turn to look sweet, young and innocent. Girls would also not admire my figure since I was looking fat all the time.
I was the wrong type of sexy at the wrong time. Dressing up to show the desired glass figure would just look vulgar to my eyes since I knew what kind of guy this would attract.
Now I am a grown-up woman addicted to a diet who hates looking sexy and is always walking on the fine line between sexy and fat, I always have the feeling that I am left with these two options only. I wonder if other girls feel the same…
This was the story of a female suffering from the repercussions of glass glass-hour figures.
Weight Loss
Losing weight can be extremely difficult for women with an hourglass body shape, especially if they are not used to doing exercises or eating healthy.
The worst part of the hourglass figure downside is trying to lose those final pounds to fit into your dream dress. Those lovely jeans you desire, or any other special occasion outfit, but you just don’t find, that easy!
If you have a small waist, then dieting can be one of the most difficult things for you as an hourglass woman. The worst part about this hourglass figure downside is that when you do decide to diet, you are still going to be bigger on top.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, you can see that the answer to the question—What are the hourglass body downsides, gives you insight into some of the disadvantages this body type has.
The hourglass shape is not for everyone. Some people may find it difficult to fit into clothing from other stores and will have a more difficult time finding clothes in their size.
Others dread the unwanted attention they have to face. The upside is that, if you like this body type, there are ways to dress your curves with fashion trends while still looking stylish!
