About the movie
The story is based on the Indian mythology of a demon Hastar who has authority of gold but is deprived of food. One family in the village has been able to revive the demon by building the temple inside an isolated mansion due to which the family gets ostracized but only an old man stays alive and he lives alone in the mansion with the idol of the demon. The mistress of the Old man visits the mansion daily.
The mistress has two sons. The son of the mistress Vinayak Rao discovers the treasure in the mansion where her mother works. The movie spans different time periods, primarily focusing on three generations of the rao family. The film delves into the consequences of Vinayak's pursuit of wealth and power. As the story progresses, it explores theme of greed, temptation and destructive nature of desire.
The cursed mansion and the diety Hastar play crucial roles in the narrative, the dark mythology and folklore of the region.
The movie beautifully portrays the message that more greed leads to destruction. By using the mythological aspect and with brilliant narrative the makers successfully directed a masterpiece that is not only very cinematic but also gives a message.
Using the thrill and horror to connect with the audience, the mythological aspect to keep them connected is beautifully done by Rahi Anil Barve. He has successfully made the best horror movie of all time with no fancy props, less popular actors and with less budget. We can say that he truly created an masterpiece. Although Tumbbad didn't get the recognition that it deserves to get, In my opinion it is a perfect movie for those who love horror, thrill and , it is surely a treat to watch.
In a nutshell Tumbbad is a typical Indian mythological bed time story that we used to hear from our grandmothers. You have a protagonist who values money more than anything, believes in mythological stories to earn money and he also has some hints on how to unlock powers beyond him. How he plays godly (or demonic?) Powers in his lust for money is the story of Tumbbad.
My rating for the movie is 4 out of 5, definitely a must watch.
You may watch the Tumbbad on Amazon prime video.
