Activism – An Over-Indulgence In Making Things Right

Any attempts to derail government-made policies, implement and promote economic reforms, eradicate social issues, etc., for a perceived greater good can be termed as activism. It is mostly pertained to the idea of liberation of some sort from the chains of the wrong holding you hostage.

Capitalism and Activism

When there are two sides to a story, capitalism has its way, which blocks activism. Capitalism is known to lift people out of poverty, but at the same time, changes in climate are affected detrimentally.

More and more indulgence in activism hampers the youth’s way of thinking in some sense, due to their misplaced sense of undue obligation towards straightening every single rod out there.

Activists have an undeniable recognition and role in questioning the things that affect marginal groups or anyone or anything for that matter, wherein the issue is when these lots keep increasing in number provided the other side of the story, that is, capitalism, keeps on pumping itself up.

As long as this is the case, activism will tend to increase, and that does not look good for any country in the context of growth prospects.

The moral courage displayed by activists certainly has significance in righting the ways of the government and lawmakers, forcing changes, and passing amendment bills, whereas the lifestyle opted for can be one to not keep up with.

How can activism impact politics?

The climate crisis is one of the epitomes of activism, and that has been protested about with perpetuation in recent years. Yet there are people and, especially, politicians out there who don’t even believe in the mere concept of climate change.

Standing up against powerful people(politicians) can get ugly in this supposedly two-sided battle. On paper, it might be regarded as a two-sided battle, wherein the truth lies otherwise.

Political activism plays out as a corrupt baseline in the whole picture of activism, although reforms and the radicality of change might seem high. The manipulative political reformers give out an act of genuine change, which is often otherwise in actuality.

Judicial activism refers to a judicial approach during the exercise of judicial review where a judge is commonly perceived as being more inclined to address constitutional issues and to nullify legislative or executive actions.

Greta Thunberg, an infamous young climate activist, faces the wrath of conservatives every single day while she puts on a scene, demanding changes, opposing the current policies undertaken, and reprimanding anyone with a contrasting thought about the same (climate change).

Largely, this idea of activism and the climate change crisis is viewed as a liberalist ideology and propaganda, henceforth making conservatives firmly stand by their school of thought and grouping them as Democrats (in the US). Conservatives are mostly Republicans.

Can activism be bad?

The answer to this question is both yes and no. It is a question of the extent to which activists want an issue to be recognized.

Gender discrimination, which is one of the most common issues people face in today’s day and age, will cause hellfire in any democratic country unless it is an unsecular one.

The US seems to be like a hub for voicing out everything that is even a little inconvenient. There, people literally practice free speech to its full potential, sometimes even exceeding that potential.

In some areas of some states, social activists spend days, if not weeks, protesting for the minutest of things, resulting in massive hindrances to transportation and other day-to-day activities.

There is a good chance of some losing it and assaulting the activists. This poses a threat not only for the public but also for the eager activists who risk it all to stand up for what’s right according to them.

A more prominent matter in the US is its states’ abortion laws. Florida’s near-total abortion ban saw a dramatic shift in that state. For quite some time now, the abortion laws have been shaky in the country.

Women are lining up on the streets, protesting for the revocation of this law. Not to pick sides, but this is a very difficult question to answer: Is abortion women’s choice or is it murder?

Uplifting activists are going berserk on this one, and rightly so because there begs a question of choice. Perhaps this way, they get to stand up against the governmental control that is dissatisfying.

Activism in India

India’s participation is steadily increasing in activism, with questions rising against the bigoted laws against certain minorities, like queer groups, and they are still without marriage rights.

Although this thing’s been going on in several countries other than India, In recent times, there has been a massive surge in numbers in India. Queer rights activists march through the streets of metropolitan cities for their parade and liberation.

For the most part, social activist movements or social activism in India are based on social issues, including discrimination, cultural issues, and oppression. We are yet to see the ugly side of activism in India, as the tiniest of issues have not yet filled the streets with outcry.

Final Thoughts

Activism is a very powerful movement to transform, or rather, reform, everything that’s wrong. It only gets out of hand when people put their lives at stake for nothing. It might mean something for them, but in the grand scheme of things, it might not be as meaningful as perceived.

The internet term Karen is used to denote these protestors, whose annoyance goes beyond tolerable in some cases. Once these Karens succeed at even one of their activist movements, they get in over their heads and try to get involved in all the irrelevant things.

The dream of being an activist is going to be a gloomy one if someone pursues it for a living. Of course, one can’t tell him otherwise and shake off his or her beliefs, but the contrasting part is that their desire to turn good can lead to making life difficult for others.
