Recently, the Election Commission of India announced the 2024 Lok Sabha Election results, in which BJP led NDA won a total of 293 seats. This time it saw a decline as it won 353 seats in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The state of Uttar Pradesh holds immense importance for BJP, and this time experts predicted that due to Ram temple inauguration in Ayodhya there are high chances of gains for BJP. However this time it could not perform well.
Here are a few reasons why BJP lost in UP and what may happen to UP in the future-
BJP had won the Lok Sabha elections of UP in 2014 and 2019. This year, BJP has not only lost their seats in UP but they have noticed a very unpredictable vote margin, compared to the elections in 2014 and 2019. There are a total of 80 Lok Sabha seats in UP, out of which the Samajwadi Party has won 37 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured 33 seats and the Indian National Congress won 6 seats. The seats secured by the BJP in Uttar Pradesh this time have been reduced compared to the seats that they won in 2014 and 2019 which were 71 and 62 respectively.
Minister of Women and Child Development of India, Smriti Irani, lost her seat in the constituency of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh against Congress’ Kishor Lal by a margin of 1,67,196 votes in the Lok Sabha election 2024. Whereas, PM Narendra Modi won his seat in Varanasi for the third time, but the vote margin went down from almost 500,000 to just 150,000.
The major setback for the BJP was losing the Faizabad constituency, where PM Narendra Modi built and inaugurated the grand Hindu temple - Ram Mandir, a hospital of 500 beds near Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, a railway station, an airport and projects worth 11,100 crore for the development of Ayodhya. This proved that people are not concerned with the growth and development of the state at all. Why didn’t people vote for the BJP, despite the BJP’s efforts to make UP one of the best states in India by spending crores of rupees on its development? – is a major question here.
Following may be the reasons for the above question and why didn’t BJP/NDA win in Uttar Pradesh-
Fewer Votes
People in Uttar Pradesh failed to vote on the day of the elections. Not only in UP, but the number of votes has reduced all over India and this is a shame to our country that people take the day of the election as a holiday and enjoy the day rather than going to cast their votes.
False Promises by the INC During the Election Rallies
The leader of the Indian National Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge distributed a guarantee form in which the women were asked to fill in their names along with their bank accounts and they were promised that they would be getting Rs. 8500 every month after the results would be declared. Now, women are standing in a queue in front of the congress office in Lucknow. Congress has certainly played with the emotions of poor women by giving them false hopes and not doing anything about it.
Distribution of the Tickets to the ‘Outsiders’
There was a report that stated that a few members of RSS were not happy with how the tickets were distributed and outsiders were given preference while ignoring the old party cadres. BJP had given tickets to the outsiders and not to the local candidates in a few places in Uttar Pradesh which may also be a reason for their loss, as people living there may be familiar with the local candidate rather than a newly appointed one.
Support of Muslims and SC/ST for Congress
Chandrachur Singh, an associate professor at Delhi University, said in an interview that, “Congress has been able to get on to have some kind of a support base amongst the Muslims as well as the Scheduled castes. Congress has been able to drive home the point that perhaps they are better off staying with the congress.”
Voters of India are Unpredictable
Looking at the elections of 2024, we can surely say that the voters of India are highly unpredictable. Ayodhya, where BJP built the Ram Mandir and to which the Samajwadi Party were in disagreement, is now in SVP’s control. There are 80% of Hindus residing in Ayodhya and still, they chose Akhilesh Yadav as their leader and not Yogi Adityanath.
Final Thoughts
An article by TOI mentioned that in 45 days of Akhilesh Yadav’s rule in UP, 699 murders had been reported. It is allegedly said that SVP has a soft leading hand to the gangsters. The CAG report on state finance says the government department under Akhilesh Yadav failed to submit utilization certificates worth Rs. 97,906.27 crores. I believe that history will repeat itself now that SVP is again in power.
