Every new generation comes with new trends and significant changes in the mindset and personality. The contemporary youth i.e. Gen Z has also come up with newer trends, especially when it comes to relationships.

Gen Z’s approach towards dating, unlike previous generations, is casual and explorative. Gen Z is reshaping dating with a focus on authenticity, flexibility, and non-traditional relationships.

Redefining Dating

Gen Z is a smarter generation, who doesn't want to be kept in a traditional zone for dating and marriages. This generation is all about exploring with multiple partners and if they are able to find someone suitable, then setting with them. 

But what they don't realise is that, in the race of experimenting and exploring, they are not actually in anything serious but are looking for fun and casual timepass to avoid loneliness. They are not able to build genuine meaningful relationships.

Impact of the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to increased social anxiety among Gen Z, making them more hesitant to initiate conversations and approach potential partners in person. Thus they have started to take easy way out i.e. Dating apps. They rely on such apps to find a suitable partner for them.

Dating Apps

Technology plays a central role in the new dating arena. Since technology is easily available, Gen Z instead of finding love in person in social space, has turned to dating apps. 

Now dating is easier than ever with apps like Tinder, Happn, Bumble, Hinge etc.; liking a person and falling for him/her has changed into swiping left and right only after looking at one’s photos and general information. 

Because of these apps, dating is now not limited to your circle but you have access to any person from any corner of the world. But the availability of multiple options brings commitment issues. 

Gen Z is always looking and exploring for a better partner because they know that if the current relationship wasn't successful then they would easily find another partner.

Fatigue with Dating Apps

Many Gen Zers are experiencing fatigue with dating apps, leading to a growing preference for in-person interactions.70% of dating apps are occupied by men and only a few are able to find some connections, rest all profiles are ignored by women. 

A report suggests that 69% of Indian men have experienced fatigue with these apps. A significant percentage of college students are opting to meet people through social settings rather than swiping on apps.

Social Media

Social media is Gen Z’s best friend and biggest influence. Many people on social media upload pictures and videos with their partners, and when the youth sees it they set unrealistic expectations for romantic relationships. 

Seeing everyone with their partner, under peer pressure, they also desperately look for a partner to overcome their loneliness.

The new era of the internet has made dating - A Business. You can see reels of people agreeing to go on a date for money with different price ranges for different types of dates. 

People are opting for such paid dates to substitute for their loneliness because screens can never compensate for humans. This loneliness and urge for support has given rise to many new concepts of dating.

New Dating Terms

Nowadays, many people are not in relationships, rather they are stuck in some weird zone.

Let's understand this through Gen Z terms -

Situationship 

When two people are together like a couple, but they don't give any commitment to each other and refrain from calling it a relationship.

Stashing 

Hiding a partner from friends and social media, indicating reluctance to commit.

Ghosting 

When a person disappears from communication without any explanation.

Breadcrumbing 

Keeping minimal contact to maintain interest without commitment.

Cuffing 

Forming temporary relationships during colder months to avoid loneliness.

Textationship 

A relationship confined to texting (intense but lacking depth). It feels real but never transitions offline.

Benching 

Keeping someone as a backup by staying in touch just enough to maintain interest without committing.

Orbiting 

When someone ghosts you but stays present by liking posts or watching stories. They are gone but still lingering online.

Love Bombing 

Over the top displays of affection early on to win you over, often followed by emotional manipulation.

Paperclipping 

When someone reappears in your life periodically, not out of interest, but to ensure that you remain an option.

In such an era, where is real love? Where is real commitment? Where is the relationship?

Mental Health Focus

This generation prioritizes mental health and self-care, often placing personal growth above traditional relationship goals. This is why, they don't want to commit and look for a temporary support system. They don't want to carry the baggage of another person. 

Now, this is not wrong but in the long run it could become problematic. A person, who is used to having multiple casual relationships, finds it difficult to settle with a person in marriage. It can also cause a rise in cases of infidelity and divorce.

Changing Attitudes Towards Sex and Relationships

Gen Z has a rather casual approach towards sex. They have normalised The Hookup culture. As societal attitudes toward sex and relationships have evolved, many young people feel less pressure to conform to traditional dating practices. 

The stigma surrounding casual sex has diminished, allowing individuals to explore their desires without fear of judgment. This is seen how terms like “Body count” are asked and discussed casually.
