Vish Interview
“The streets taught me how to earn attention from strangers—no one owes you a listen there.”
1. Vish, your transition from London’s streets to Mumbai’s has been remarkable. How did your journey as a street singer begin?
I started busking on the streets of the UK while traveling extensively. During that time, I met my girlfriend, Minoli, who encouraged me to sing Indian songs on the streets. Those performances connected deeply with people, and before I knew it, they began going viral.
2. What does street music mean to you personally, beyond just performing?
Music is a form of healing for me. Singing on the streets allows me to connect with people on a very human level, and seeing smiles on their faces makes my day just as much as it brightens theirs.
3. How have the people and places you’ve performed for influenced your music?
Street performances have taught me invaluable lessons—how to engage with people, perform authentically, and adapt to different audiences. I also learned a great deal by observing and interacting with other buskers across the UK, which helped shape my approach to music and performance.
4. What challenges have you faced while performing on the streets, and how have they shaped your artistry?
Street performing comes with its own set of challenges, from carrying heavy equipment to dealing with unpredictable UK weather and, at times, difficult individuals. These experiences strengthened me as an artist and taught me how to handle tough situations with confidence.
5. Street performances often teach resilience and authenticity. What’s one life lesson the streets taught you that a studio or stage couldn’t?
One of the biggest lessons street music taught me is how to capture and hold the attention of complete strangers, regardless of the language I’m singing in. That’s something no studio or stage can truly teach.
6. How do you see street singing evolving in today’s digital and social media-driven world?
Social media has played a huge role in increasing appreciation for street music and encouraging new artists to step out and perform. At the same time, street performances are declining in some countries due to increasing restrictions. That said, many places still support busking through licenses and designated performance areas.
7. If you could perform on any street in the world, where would it be—and why?
I would love to perform in Dubai because of its large Indian community. However, street performances there require special permissions, as the city follows very strict regulations.
