Shreya Sharma Interview
"As an artist and storyteller, I think my songs are about bold women who are unafraid to voice their desires, speak about their sexuality, go after their dreams and not care about the world."
Q. To begin with, how would you introduce Shreya Sharma today- not just as a singer, but as an artist and storyteller?
Love that question! As an artist and storyteller, I think my songs are about bold women who are unafraid to voice their desires, speak about their sexuality, go after their dreams and not care about the world. Growing up, those women were villainised on TV and movies, and it played a massive role in how my childhood friends dreamt about their future. My songs are a way for me to flip that conception.Q. Mumbai is often called a city of opportunities, but also of constant hustle. How has the city shaped your sound, discipline, and resilience as a musician?
The answers keep changing, but Mumbai has taught me humility more than anything. You can have a great week and then sit at home the next day. I’ve learnt that the drive to grow has to come from within, and it has to be an everlasting fire. However, I also acknowledge that it isn’t possible to always be on. It’s important to take mental health breaks, address burnout and do things to enrich your soul. It’s very easy to run out of fuel in this city, so I always say do whatever you gotta do to recharge. Whether that’s travel, hanging out with friends, taking a few days to yourself to cook, read and recharge- it’s important to have a self-care routine.
I think super sexy, sophisticated rnb party numbers are my vibe. Very 90’s coded and very me!
Q. Live shows can be unpredictable, with different crowds, energy levels, and spaces. What’s one unspoken skill every live performer must develop but no one talks about?
To read the crowd! You’ve gotta be able to see if the crowd is getting bored, and if it’s time to speed up. It’s very important to come up with a sign language with the band to say we’re skipping this song or going to this.Q. Is there a song of yours that feels closest to who you really are but didn’t necessarily perform the best commercially?
There are a few. I think Teri meri raatein is a very personal song, and I expected it to do better, but it didn’t. Nevertheless, I’m proud of it. I know that it expresses something that every person feels at some point- the guilt after a fight. The feeling of having crossed a line in the heat of the moment.
Q. If your life right now had a background score, what genre would it be and why?
I think super sexy, sophisticated rnb party numbers are my vibe. Very 90’s coded and very me!Bio
