The Art of Design and its Societal Impact

Design is an area of interest which includes a wide range of activities. It’s the society that revolves completely around the aspects of design. It’s co-related to day to day life of every human being, either the material or immaterial aspects of everyday life.

I was a student was unaware of the real meaning of the term designing until I researched and studied about it. When I was first asked to define what Design is? , all I knew was it’s what we draw manually or technology to create a product. A product to fulfill the need of every individual in mass or we can call it mass production to satisfy the need want or demands of public. What I analysed so far is Design is for the benefits of the society, but it’s immensely used as a marketing strategy for the society, to earn from society. There’s a misconception between the people about what design actually means. When it’s asked – what is design? ; The most common answer we get is something that beautifies a product or looks aesthetically beautiful by any means; it’s functional and makes things easier for the society. Well, it’s true, but it’s just a way or a perspective of an individual to look at it. I perceived that currently, design and society plays a significant role in the ideology and thought of people’s life.

There are factors that dominate the modern society that are the economics, politics and of course technology. We also see these forces constituting part of the culture in our society. The design is also sustained by the same factors and it can be said that society and design are interdependent. The essay details the critical analysis of arguments put forward by other ideologists and their views... We say design is a problem-solving process or making something appear good and aesthetically beautiful but there are things beyond that like, in reality, it’s about finding the best solution out or to make it better and like the leaders in politics or any socialist, designer also make sure that the problem is being solved by keeping all of this in mind.

A designer plays a vital role in influencing the mass or the society moreover in shaping the society and as most of the people might think that a designer influenced by the means of infrastructure only but, he/she also helps in maintaining a lifestyle as well as mentality as it creates impression and perception. A designer takes care of the requirements and comfort of the consumer or the society and finds the easiest yet most efficient way to get the best resultant to satisfy the need of society. That efficient way is termed as design. Its design that made easier for the working people to transfer emails from their mobile phones from any area or sector of the world; its design that made you love your motorbikes or cars and give it the value it has in today’s world. If we talk about technology we see that it’s a great influence on the modern society, it plays in the development of the society and also by stimulating not only the economy but society’s socio-cultural values. The human society seems rather evolve largely through changes so gradual as to be all but imperceptible, at least compared to the generational cycle of the individuals.

The critics such as Henry David Thoreau, for instance, suggested that improvements in society’s technical means are no guarantee of improved ends and that they may instead lead to mechanistic and fatalistic outlook, positing that ‘we do not ride upon the railroad it rides upon us’. Today’s generation, the youth seek to change the world and turn it to a more comforting place to live, by economic reforms or by improving the services that are being provided to the society and also many other aspects of the society and this will happen by the contribution of designers those tend to involve modern technology in work.

But this statement does not necessarily mean that the youth today want to completely change the world where they grew up, they believe that the advancement in the technology can surely facilitate the social change as no previous generation got the opportunity like today’s generation to experience the authenticity of learning so much from one another.
A product when is designed by a designer, one thing he/she keeps in mind is the look of it because that’s what attracts public or the society and the appeal tends them to buy it but, that’s not all. The design is done as mass production but it’s for more utility purpose or functionality is something which is more important. The important aspects of Design are its material, form, and functionality of the product or machine, etc. If indeed design’s goal is to follow functionality; forms can still be considered to follow function for many analogy objects, especially that ones which are the pure forms like- chair, spoon or knives. It’s a purposeful visual creation that fills the practical needs of the society.

Like it’s said by Victor Papnick – “Design is a co-human activity and all humans are designer”. The design is something that’s made, shaped, modified, distributed among the society but is related to the environment. In my opinion, whatever is or will be designed should be done by keeping things in mind like – sustainability, No harm should be done to the natural surrounding until a decline comes to the product, it should be more purposeful, utility-based, functional and helps society to maintain the balance in the environment. For all this society should be involved and had to be well aware of the consequences of buying the product and what will be its effects in the future.

Now if we talk about need and want of the people then these are two completely different factors that deal with the day to day life of them. One never realizes the importance of them individually in life and that happens due to unawareness. I am not an expert, but this concept of design does create a great impact on society. The design is endlessly fascinating because it’s constantly changing and is contextualized. Mainly design purpose is to service of a better life but, unfortunately, it does not always reach its objectives. It can empower society but sometimes lead to a consequence of unintended factors.
For an example, the computer virus was designed as a self-replicating form of software but was not intended to be malignant, yet proved to be destructive and open abuse. Also if we give a look we are controlled by signage and maps throughout we drive on a road or a highway, which is, of course, guiding us safely and efficiently from place to place.

There is also a misconception of design being confused with the art which should never happen . If design it seemed like a marginal discipline that people reclassify themselves as an artist, we will never get a best possible designer who could give a powerful and productive medium that can help to build a better life. Whether we are aware or not but design surrounds the society and there are different other areas and spaces this word enriches. The best example to explain that how our lives revolve around design is our smartphone, believe it or not, but it has been designed to put in our palm of our hands. There are different influencing factors that change the taste and behavior of consumers. There are different social issues our society deal with every day. some of them are the- discrimination done by setting standards by designed products based on similar values, standards, interests and behavior, Multiculturalism where ethnic groups influence what is designed and produced, etc.
