A
persuasive mix of images, music, dialogues, and special effects, in cinema can
incite deep changes in the mindset and outlook of an individual. There are some ways to harness the
facility of flicks to heal, grow, and alter.
From emotional dramas to
candyfloss romances to action-thrillers, cinema derives its sustenance, ideas,
and imaginations from its surroundings. Cinema creates a surreal or tangled
wave of deceit, which needs to be in sync with societal aspirations, and the
basic urge of humanity to recreate, entertain and enjoy.
The Power of Cinema
You
are what you watch is what they say? The kind of content we watch influences our lives in many ways. Cinema is one of the most complex and
powerful medium in the present world.
It helps us to realize and understand our
own lives, the lives of those around us, and even how our society and culture
operate. They can shed light on political and spiritual matters too and provide
understanding and perspective, and may open our eyes to new ways of thinking,
feeling, and pursuing our lives.
For
example: the Oscar-winning movie ‘Gladiator’, directed by Ridley Scott, despite having a fictional
storyline truly represented the life of the Roman gladiators and the political
situation in Rome at that time.
It showed a vivid glimpse of the Roman culture
and has influenced the tactics of various political stalwarts who didn’t want
history to repeat itself. Perhaps the reason why films are so influential is
that they allow people to fantasize and inspire them about whom they want to
be.
The movie ‘The Wolf of the Wall Steet’ has surely set the path going for many who wants to pursue
a career like the protagonist of the film. One of the important aspect of the films are that they inspire, they inspire people to work hard and not give up on their dreams.
Cinema not always has a positive influence on people, at times they can influence people negatively. In 1971, the
same year the classic ‘A Clockwork Orange’ came out, the crime rate in America
rose.
It is speculated that some people were influenced by the psychopaths in
the movie and the awful things they were doing and that affected them in a way
that they no longer suppressed their desire to do criminal activity.
Many people are of the view that films and TV shows do not always influence people, as incidents shown in the films are just a fictional reflection of the society we all live in. Hence, incidents shown in the film should not be taken seriously.
But what people don't realize is that films and TV shows are reachable and accessible to a huge number of people, therefore, it can be categorized as the form of art which is easily accessible to almost everyone. Hence, from a little boy or a girl from the village to a young boy of the city they both are equally inspired by the films.
Films helps us to understand various shades of life as well as of that of the society, they help us to deal with with our emotions and feelings and also helps us to understand a situation from different angles. In short films helps us to understand our real life situations in a better way.
Influence of Films
in Our Society Is Bidirectional
Society
reflects in movies and successively movies influence society. There is a thread
reflection in both. The fickle mind of humans compels them to change their
perspective, opinions, and choices by just watching a movie or a series. Our
entire thought process is challenged and as a result, changes may occur.
The world shown in the movies may or may not
be true but not many note that and presume the reality to be
such. Socially enlightening movies help us understand the planet and positively
influence our thought process and help us attempt to do our bit to be of some
help to humanity, for example, helping/donating to charities. Besides, films
make our imaginations run wild.
Movies Are Breaking
Taboos
Movies
have popularised women empowerment,
broken notions of dowry, and have helped in breaking mindless superstitious
beliefs. Movies have to be thanked for broadening people’s thinking regarding
various subjects earlier thought as taboo such as the cluster of caste,
sanitation, LGBTQIA, love, etc.
For
instance, the famous Indian movie ‘Padman’ featuring Akshay Kumar as the lead actor highlighted the
importance of sanitation and showed the stigma attached to menstruation and women in general. The
film reached out to a huge audience and enlightened many.
Another notable film-
Pink, which addressed the issue of sexual harassment against women also sent
out a strong message. The success of films like Kabir Singh, Mardaani, Hindi Medium has
proved that there has been a substantial change in the way people perceive
major topics.
