“Bhaiya ek cup chai de do!” (Brother, can you get me a cup of tea?).
I believe this is one of the most used phrases in India. For Indians, chai is not just a drink, its everything to us. Whatever be the reason or occasion, a cup of tea would take its place there.
From waking up in the morning till evening, we consume around 3-5 cups of tea Tea has become an inseparable part of our lives, we have made it a part of our daily life.
Waking up in the morning, we see everyone in the family sipping a hot cup of tea with breakfast. Drinking tea gets the freshness in you and makes you feel active. It’s true that tea has herbal properties which make your immunity stronger and get you rejuvenated.
Ask an Indian, which drink goes with any snacks, and the answer will be – Tea. Dip a biscuit in tea or munch in any snack, you just need a cup of tea to enjoy your savory. You will not believe, I dip Oreo biscuits in tea and enjoy eating it. Though the combination might sound weird, we tend to make our own combo with tea. There are no rules to consume tea.
Do you remember the last time you went to see a girl for a marriage proposal at her home? What’s the most common sight? Yes, the girl getting tea for everyone and you praise her for making the best tea. Tea acts as a sign of bond here, you connect with the delicacy of tea and the communication between two families starts. Tea builds relationships.
How about college or office breaks? Don’t you just go to the nearest cafeteria or the canteen to have a cup of tea with friends and have a small chit-chat? We call it “Chai pe charcha” (Discussion over tea), this helps in connecting with each other and getting to know everyone better. Tea is the bridge to share knowledge and discuss, ultimately making good connections.
Imagine it’s raining now, what does your taste bud tell you? – “Tea and Pakora”. The ultimate combo, sitting in your balcony looking at the raindrops and sipping a hot cup of tea. It gives you relaxation and makes you feel light and happy. Tea goes with every season, during winters we consume ginger tea to keep us warm. Tea makes our mood in flow with the moment.
To drive away from sleep while studying or working, the perfect solution to it is to have a cup of tea. It helps you to be awake because of its anti-oxidant properties. You feel energized and have a feeling of positivity. It enhances your performance. You can think clearly and concentrate on your work. Tea can just do wonders.
I remember the last time I was having a bad throat and headache, my mom made me a cup of herbal tea. It did have soothing herbal properties, I felt better and recharged. We can see that it’s serving medicinal purposes too acting as a pain-killer.
We saw that tea has multiple purposes from being a wake-up drink to acting as a pain killer, tea is the ultimate drink for Indians. Also, if you see the Tea leaves advertisements, they all relate to emotional connect with our loved ones. Tea is our booze helping us socialize with everyone in the Indian society.
As William E. Gladstone says – “If you are cold, tea will warm you; if you are too heated, tea will cool you; if you are depressed, tea will cheer you up; if you are excited, tea will calm you down.”
