After the emergency in 1975 anti-incumbency wave became stronger. The wave led by leaders like Jay Prakash Narayan, Morarji Desai led the country to a new era of democratic socialism.
This emergency was an unlawful chapter that claimed to become an era of authoritarian dictatorship where Indira, Sanjay Gandhi, and their close aides ruled the country.
Thousands of poor Indians were jailed and arrested for breaking laws, media houses faced brunt for covering news and there was a fearful environment created to establish a one-man dictatorship. An authoritarian law named Misa was used to jail thousands in the name of an internal security breach.
Due to the huge protests and dharna, the emergency was revoked and the election was called for in following times after two years in 1977.
But in the elections, Indira lost for the first time and Socialist leader Morarji Desai led Janata Party government was formed. Though the government was a coalition government, the election left Congress into testing waters. For the first time in Indian electoral history, Congress got defeated in national elections.
Congress's existence was in crisis. Then Indira Gandhi single-handedly recovered the situation and went on to win a landslide majority in the coming elections in 1979.
The whole process of rebuilding Congress image started from the nondescript village of Belchi, in Patna district of Bihar. In the year of 1970s, Bihar was infamous for caste clashes, and deaths related to this was a pretty common affair in most of the Bihar villages.
In the village of Belchi, a violent caste conflict happened that took eleven lives of whom eight were Dalits. They were being killed by upper-caste landlords.
After hearing the incident Indira Gandhi went to visit Belchi, on her own as there was no hyperactive media some local journalists could accompany her.
As of then reaching Belchi was a difficult proposition due to lack of developed communication so she started walking and took an elephant ride when a fellow villager offered his elephant, it took her almost four and a half hours to reach Belchi from Patna airport. There she interacted with local people.
This was the first visit by any member of the Gandhi clan after an emergency to meet the local people. The whole incident helped massively to boost the image of Indira Gandhi in public spheres and helped her regain lost popularity.
The media made headlines after knowing the whole incident.
Indira went on to become the Prime minister again though people may have forgotten Belchi and it's development agenda.
But surely we can say the Belchi incident changed the political course in a different direction.
