1. Tell us more about yourself and your profession.

I am Dr. Nidhi Goradia, (BPTh from KEM Hospital, FCRPT from AIIPMR, Certified McKenzie Therapist), I’m a consultant and corporate physiotherapist. I practice in South Bombay.

Physical therapy (PT), also known as physiotherapy, is one of the allied health professions that, by using evidence-based kinesiology, exercise prescription, health education, mobilization, electrical and physical agents, treats acute or chronic pain, movement and physical impairments resulting from injury, trauma or illness typically of musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological and endocrinological origins.

Physical therapy is used to improve a patient's physical functions through physical examination, diagnosis, prognosis, patient education, physical intervention, rehabilitation, disease prevention and health promotion.

I practice in South Bombay where I provide physiotherapeutic treatment in the following areas-musculoskeletal disorders (aches and pains related to joints and muscles), neurological conditions (Eg: paralysis, cerebral palsy, facial palsy), pediatric and geriatric rehabilitation and home health care.

I have taken various successful online and offline sessions and seminars on office ergonomics, postural awareness and work from home tips for an array of companies.

2. What is your fitness mantra?

Fitness is a way of life, its not a journey with a destination.

Fitness should be adopted as an everyday routine, not as an occasional hobby.

3. What are some of the major misconceptions about proper body posture?

MYTH - If you want to correct a bad posture, become military straight.

FACT - Becoming military straight doesn’t address a poor posture and can cause muscle tension and distortion of the spine. In time, the discomfort and fatigue cause many to slouch again. You need to be 10 percent short of the military position so that your spine is relaxed, is not slouched and can be maintained easily for a longer duration.

MYTH - Posture is genetically determined.

FACT - Posture isn’t determined genetically, it very much differs from person to person, and is developed as an habit over a period of time. It depends a lot on your lifestyle.

MYTH - If you buy ergonomic chairs, your posture will be fine

FACT - Ergonomic chairs help you maintain your posture, but do not force you sit in the right manner which means if you are going to slouch on an ergonomic chair also, then that chair is going to be of no use. Its you who has to make a conscious effort to sit correctly and the ergonomic chair will aid you maintain it.

4. How can one maintain a healthy lifestyle?

Tips for maintaining healthy lifestyle are:

  • Healthy eating(diet and nutrition).
  • Physical activity and exercise keeping in mind the limitation of the body.
  • Getting enough sleep in the night.
  • Cultivating a positive mindset.
  • Spend sometime for yourself.
  • If you are suffering from any medical issues, consult your doctor rather than finding your answers over the net.

5. How can one build a successful career in your field?

To be a good physical therapist, one needs to have a good hands on. One needs to be empathetic and caring towards their patients, and that not all patients with the same kinds of pain will have the same treatment protocol. The exercise should be patient specific.

The therapist should treat the patient holistically and always hear out the patient completely.

6. What is one piece of advice you would like to give someone who wishes to lose weight?

Diet and exercise go hand in hand for losing weight, doing one more than the other will also yield you results but the results will not be healthy. You may lose weight, reach your desired number on the weighing scale but in the long run it may not be maintained.

Doing crash diets, exercise challenges for a week time will not help you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Lose weight by taking an health experts opinion, she will give you the dietary requirements, the exercise routine and also a maintenance program which will tailor made according to your body requirements and will be different from person to person.

7. Which is your favorite book and why?

My favourite book is ‘The Magic’ by Rhonda Byrne.

As the name goes the book is truly magical ,its makes you fall in love with yourself which is very vital. It teaches you that gratitude is the way of life and one can achieve all they wish by just following simple practices given in the book.

I have gained a greater sense of awareness, happiness, joy, and I am truly blessed, and grateful for this book. My mother introduced this book to me a year back and she ensured that she, my sister and me all of us have our own copies. She feels that this book is the best guide for all the circumstances that arise in life and I second that too.
