Less Is Always More in Makeup - Khushi Dang

Social media presence is very important as half of the world is looking through social media for choosing the right person to do their makeup or hair.

1. Tell me about you and your journey.

My name is Khushi Dang. I am 19 years old. This year I completed my foundation year at London College Of Fashion and I look forward to pursuing my undergrad there itself in Fashion Visual Merchandising and Branding. I created my blog in 2019 and got really active on my Instagram account during that time.

I had an inclination towards fashion ever since I was a teen and I was obsessed with makeup and skincare. Slowly, I started making videos and writing about my thoughts and people showed a keen interest in it which motivated me. I started off at 700 followers and now I am at 5000 hoping to hit 10K soon.

Starting my own blog was really hard for me because I have been a very shy and reserved person almost all my life. I have been conscious of my appearance and always had self-doubts but I realised I would have to step out of it and work towards improving myself, learn new things and get inspired by creators all around the world.

This field can be very overwhelming at times but working hard and letting yourself out is the only way.

2. Why did you choose this career?

As I said, I have always had an inclination towards fashion and beauty and this seemed like a good option for me. It is a very experimental and open field.

You could take risks and end up creating a masterpiece and the best part is you aren't answerable to anyone, you have the freedom to create good content and work in any field you like.

Plus, I love how makeup can enhance our features and help the person hide or enhance their flaws. Makeup is a form of art and it's amazing how you can express anything through the right kind of makeup.

3. How can one build a clientele as a makeup artist?

The right way to grow as a makeup artist is to do great work and showcase it in an even better manner. Word of mouth is extremely important in this field. If you do great work, you would have enough amount of clientele.

Social media presence is very important as half of the world is looking through social media for choosing the right person to do their makeup or hair. Facebook ads/ Instagram ads are a great way to grow and they even give you an option to target the type of clients you want.

Also, nobody just wants to see bridal makeup, it is very important you show diversity on your page, different types of looks, skin types, detailing and everything counts.

4. What are some of your top makeup tips?

A few of my favourite makeup tips are:

1) Less is always more in makeup

2) Always use under eye gel and prep the skin before makeup, it can change your whole look

3) Use your reds/pink lipsticks as your skin correctors, it's less expensive

4) A drop of bright shade or highlighter on the inner corner of your eye can change your whole look

5. What kind of job opportunities one can get after becoming a makeup artist?

There are many options possible once you become a makeup artist, there's freelance makeup artist, celebrity beauty expert and makeup artist, nail technician, beauty blogger, skin and makeup educator, you could even work in the fashion industry. There's a world full of opportunities after this course and there are no restrictions.

6. Which professional courses would you suggest for aspiring artists?

You could do a professional makeup and hair course, bridal makeup and hair, face and body painting workshop, cosmetic science, 3D effects for performance and fashion, Creative Direction, Makeup and prosthetics for performance. There's a huge variety of courses to look at around the world.

7. Which is your favourite book and why?

My favourite book so far has been: The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled into the spotlight and Made History, Robin Givhan.

It talks about the international fashion show that took place at the Palace of Versailles in 1973, it talked about sustainable fashion and how the whole world would change one day and has a lot more to it.
