Spotify Returns To Safari

Spotify users can once again avail Apple's Safari web browser to access the streaming service web player following the restoration of Safari to the list of supported browsers by Spotify after 3 years. The others in the list are:

  • Google's Chrome
  • Mozilla's Firefox
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Opera.

Spotify is a commercial music streaming service providing music content from a range of major and independent record labels. It was actually started as a small startup in the city of Stockholm, Sweden by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon in 2008. Since then Spotify has grown into biggest music streaming platform in the world leaving behind Amazon music,Google play music, YouTube music and Apple music.

The Clash

Back in September 2017, Spotify quietly removed support for Safari browser with its web player. Spotify's Costumer service representative confirmed the incompatibility between the web player and Safari.

In the recent updates of September 2017, Spotify was no longer available for streaming in Safari browser.

However both Spotify and Apple made no official announcements and didn't explain the problem clearly. One study suggested that the issue was due to Google's Windvine media optimizer plugin used by Spotify for music streaming on the web which was strongly opposed by Apple on security grounds.

Other speculation was about Apple trying to benefit its Apple music app since Spotify and Apple music are forefront rivals in music streaming services. It is to be noted that Safari is a pre-installed default web browser for Mac, iPhone and iPad.

Spotify Comes Back

Now, however, Safari is finally added back to its list of supported browsers. Safari users can enjoy their favorite songs from the comfort of the Mac's browser by visiting Spotify's web player.
