Even in today’s advanced culture, animal cruelty still prevails all over the world. Within every 60 seconds, an animal gets abused, which is unacceptable from at least today’s generation.
Animal cruelty takes many different forms, but the impact is always the same. An animal is capable of love and creating social relationships. They also experience pain, fear, and desperation the same as us human beings.
We live in a world that not only turns human beings to animal cruelty but also condones it. It’s legal to raise chickens for the sole purpose of slaughtering them later. Which is ridiculous! And most of the people might not agree and argue that it is a source of income but it is animal cruelty.
The problem is that there aren’t enough people fighting for animal rights and speaking up against animal cruelty.
If everyone starts looking after animals — and not just dogs and cats —but after every fellow animal as someone who should be treated properly and be given the same amount of respect we give to other human beings. We would see far lesser cases of animal cruelty.
Firstly, we have to spread awareness. What is animal cruelty?
Animal cruelty is the abuse, neglect or carelessness towards an animal. It’s that simple.
Some aspects of animal cruelty involve putting animals in situations that hurt, frighten, and terrorize them, However, animal cruelty takes place every day in all places. It might be happening inside your neighbour’s house or at a lab.
You might have encountered stray animals throughout your life who are abandoned by their owners.
Why Do People Abuse Animals or Are Willing to Accept Animal Abuse?
If human beings will not understand that an animal suffers both physically and emotionally just like we humans do, till then they may actively participate in activities which will cause them sufferings - without understanding the consequences of their actions.
Unless you try to change your attitudes towards animals by understanding and discussing their emotional and cognitive abilities, animals will keep suffering cruelty.
Recently some evidence has been collected in recent years demonstrating that some people are deliberately cruel to animals because something bad happened in their lives. In such cases, animal abuse is done as a way of dealing with their abuse.
Fundamentally, animal cruelty occurs because of lack of understanding that animals can suffer too and it is our job to educate people that all animals can suffer, and encourage and make people understand to change their actions accordingly.
Cases of Animal Cruelty Fall Into Many Categories -
1. Animal Abuse
Most cases of animal abuse involve wilful harming. When a man kicks a dog for having an accident in the house it is animal abuse. One of the main problems is that animal abuse rarely occurs in front of our eyes, it happens behind closed doors that aren’t open to the public.
It doesn’t exist for us but unfortunately for the affected animals, it does exist. Animal abuse is a systemic problem that gets handed down from a parent to their kids as well as from culture to culture.
2. Animal Neglect
In most of the cases, a person keeps an animal in his or her house but doesn’t know how to properly care for that animal. This is not at all a justification for the neglect, but instead a recognition that we need to educate people more about the animals that are in their care.
Some animals spend their entire lives in neglectful conditions where they are not treated properly and eventually die of dehydration, malnutrition or other problems.
3. Animal Exploitation
Some people believe that we can treat animals any which way we want, we can assault them, beat them, use them, especially for monetary gains.
Exploiting animals is also a form of animal cruelty, especially when the exploitation is against the animal’s will where animals are forced into scary or unsafe situations.
Circuses, zoos, aquatic theme parks, often exploit animals in the name of entertainment. The crowds don’t see animals being forced and kept on cages and are denied of socialization even with their species. Around 96 per cent of a circus animal’s life is spent in a cage.
4. Animal Testing
Even after rendering unnecessary animal testing by scientific developments. It still occurs all over the globe.
Animals while testing is exposed to all manner of toxic chemicals and substances, many of which cause itching, burning, pain, lost body parts, and other horrible consequences. The animal cruelty that permeates in laboratories doesn’t need to proceed, it should be stopped.
Why Animal Cruelty Prevails
There’s no specific reason behind why animal cruelty prevails. It can occur because of many reasons, many of which stem from human self-interest. If we only care about ourselves, we can view animals through a distorted lens.
Few reasons why people treat animals cruelly are -
1. Viewing Animals as Objects
People often view animals as objects. They only treat them as a tool or object and have no personal attachment, no feelings towards them. They treat animals as use and throw.
2. Using Animals for Monetary Gain
Animal cruelty comes from the desire to make money. If someone can sell animal meat and other products and make money, they will do everything to justify the slaughtering of innocent animals.
The same goes for any industry that abuse animals for monetary gain -
1. Selling furs
2. Selling tickets to an animal entertainment show
3. Stealing body parts from animals to sell
3. Disregarding Animal Feelings and Emotions
Some people believe that human beings are the only ones on this planet who can feel emotions like pain, fear, sadness, joy and hope which is wrong. Anyone who has pets can bet on that animals too feel emotions.
They experience happiness when they play with a new toy or plaything, pain or discomfort when they get injured, fear when they’re confronted with a new encounter or experience, sorrow when someone they love dies.
Emotions aren’t limited to dogs and cats, wild animals too grieve the deaths of their loved ones.
