Pratha Ramteke - Only Proper Training Can Tell You the True Meaning of Music

Listening is the key. The more you listen, the more you understand the renditions. When you listen correctly, it will automatically come out from your mouth in the right manner.

1. Tell us more about your background and journey.

Hey! My name is Pratha Ramteke. I am from Kanker Chhattisgarh. I belong to a middle-class family. Like every middle-class family, I also have a few dreams.

I have just completed my 12th this year, and I took my admission in Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwa Vidyalaya Khairagarh. I wish to complete my graduation from this university. I am a science student, but fortunately, I’m more inclined to music, and I decided to go with it.

I am just a beginner, and I want to become a good singer. My mom and dad both are government servants, and I am glad that both of them supported me throughout. Hopefully, my music journey will start from this December, and I wish I can serve people and God through my talent.

2. When did you first decide you wanted to pursue music and how did you start?

My music journey basically started from my school when I was in 6th grade. I used to go to competitions and contest, but I didn't realise that I can sing. I don't think I would have been a singer if my music teacher had not forced me to sing on the annual function. I am thankful to Anurag Kinjalk ma'am.

When I started to perform at the stage, it made me feel more confident and stronger. I won many competitions at the district level, national level and international level.

I got the opportunity to perform at Nepal, and I secured 1st position in that competition. I had no idea that people can graduate in music also. Like every student, I also had decided to be a doctor just because I love biology. I was in class 10th, and then my school senior told me about this course, and I decided to go into this field.

3. Who is your favourite singer, and why?

For me, my favourite singer is Lata Mangeshkar ma'am. I admire her a lot. The only reason I love her is the control she has on her voice and renditions. Till now I have never heard any singer who sings so flawless like her.

After her, it's Ghulam Ali Sahab, a famous Ghazal singer. Ghulam Ali sir inspired a lot of people like me. My zone is Bollywood, but when I listened to him, it was beautiful. I always try to sing Ghazal I love that form a lot.

Today there are so many amazing singers in the industry, but Arijit Singh just took my heart. Not only Bollywood, but he sings every form of music which totally amazes me. His voice has a different feel. Our generation can fully relate and enjoy a lot of his songs.

4. Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a singer?

Being a singer, there are so many opportunities. You can be a playback singer or a teacher/professor. You can have your own academy or institution or be a part of a band.

Apart from that, you can pursue courses in performing arts like BPA, MPA and PhD from many universities for job purposes. You can also start your YouTube channel and earn money.

Nowadays, social media is the best way to promote yourself. It's a medium which can change your life if your content is good enough. Therefore, singers have many options now.

5. Is formal training required, or can one train themselves purely based on talent?

In my opinion, formal training is necessary for every singer. There is so much difference between singing and singing with understanding.

Yes, it's possible to be a born star and to sing everything, but training can bring you to another perspective as well as the discipline which every singer must possess. Only proper training can tell you the value, manner, the way of singing as well as the true meaning of music.

6. What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring artists?

I don't know much about music even I am a beginner (Not trained), but what helps me is only listening. Listening is the key. The more you listen, the more you understand the renditions.

When you listen correctly, it will automatically come out from your mouth in the right manner. I am not a trained singer, but I always listen to any song more than 30 times before applying.

7. Which is your favourite book and why?

My favourite book is "Effortlessly Mastery". My music teacher once suggested this book. I read the whole book, and I genuinely liked it. The purpose of this book is to tell you how to use self-control and mental toughness to achieve your goals in the field of music.

This book teaches me that the joy of practising is concentration. I personally recommend this book to every beginner.
