1. Tell us something about your background and journey?
I’m an Australian-born Artist living in Singapore. I grew up in Singapore, where a career in the entertainment industry isn’t really viable or desirable for most Asian parents. I started playing bars and clubs at the age of 18 before forming a band called ‘ The Sam Willows ‘ in 2012, where we got signed by Sony Music and put out 2 albums.
Somewhere around 2016, I started my music company 'Zendyll' where we have a music agency, recording studios, music publishing, and artist services. The journey has been hard, especially in Singapore where music isn’t something that is widely appreciated. I’m slowly striving to make the community better, and create more music constantly.
2. What inspired you to pursue music as a career?
Since hearing my first-ever Bon Jovi record when I was a kid, I've always been a huge fan of music. I’ve wanted to be a rockstar since young. I got a slight taste of it and never looked back.
3. How would you describe your music?
I’ve always described my music as ‘cruising’ music. It's the kind of music where you listen on the go, or on a dark rainy night.
4. How did the pandemic affect the music industry?
I think the pandemic caused live shows to be canceled. And music is a social experience, where people come together to enjoy a collective experience. ‘Livestream’ concerts don’t hit the same way, and that’s probably the biggest issue.
5. How can one sustain in the music industry?
Being open-minded, understanding other industries (fashion, film, sports, e-sports, etc), and constantly upgrading skills.
6. Which musician do you admire?
I really admire Pharrell Williams. I’m a huge fan of his music, his ideas, and just the way he perceives things.
7. What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Have a Plan A, and follow it through.
8. Which is your favorite book and why?
My favorite book is 'Narconomics; How to run a drug cartel' by Tom Wainwright. His breakdown of the cartel business model is very relevant to how music can be promoted and viewed too. It is a commodity whose value is determined by the general public. My favorite read of all time for sure!
