Sneha Tari - Yoga Is an Invaluable Gift of India's Ancient Tradition

I prioritize Sleep, Nutrition and Exercise, In that order. You can never compensate for poor sleep and unhealthy food with exercise. If you have to choose between losing sleep and exercising more vs getting enough sleep and exercising less, always chose the latter.

1. Tell us more about yourself and your profession.

I am Sneha Tari, a certified yoga teacher from Mumbai. I started practising yoga 10 years ago watching YouTube videos, two years ago I completed my Yoga Teacher training certification.

Yoga has helped me enhance my body awareness and has aided in my meditation practices. It helped me to discover and reinvent myself. Ignited a passion in me to teach which I didn't know I am capable of.

2. What is your fitness mantra?

I prioritize Sleep, Nutrition and Exercise, In that order. You can never compensate for poor sleep and unhealthy food with exercise. If you have to choose between losing sleep and exercising more vs getting enough sleep and exercising less, always chose the latter.

3. What are some of the major misconceptions about diets and exercises?

Spot reduction is a myth. I always get enquiries about losing fat of the specific body part. Your body will choose where to burn off fat based on your genetics. And usually belly fat is the last one to go.

We have always heard that breakfast is an important meal of the day and should not be missed. But there’s no scientific proof that skipping breakfast can result in lack of energy or reduced function. Always observe and understand what your body needs.

4. How can one maintain a healthy lifestyle with Yoga?

Yoga balances your mind and body and connects you back to your spirit. It brings wholeness back to the self. Life creates separation because of stress. When you practice you become more peaceful, experience joy, your energy is increased and the mind is in a more acceptable state. Yoga helps to increase your awareness and you are more present.

5. How can one build a successful career in your field?

Yoga is a great career choice as it is an ancient art and a natural way of remaining fit and healthy. It also helps in improving mental and physical health. Once you start practising yoga, you can take it on as a profession.

Before becoming a yoga instructor, it is important to learn the practice from a reliable and trusted yoga school. You can pursue short-term and long-term courses to become a yoga professional.

6. What is one piece of advice you would like to give someone who wishes to practice yoga?

'Commit to the practice'.
This doesn’t mean sign a long-term contract or practice for hours every day, but it’s a good idea to set aside some time at home between classes to practice basic poses. Go to class at least once a week for a few weeks before you decide whether or not you are meant to be a yogi. If you aren’t hooked after the first or second class, try another teacher or style before you give up on the practice entirely.

7.How do Yoga and daily exercise contributes to overall well being and happiness?

Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfilment, harmony between man and nature, a holistic approach to health and well-being.

It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well being.
