Sprawling over an area of 5.5kms, the Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach, is located in the state of Kerala in southwestern India. Featured among the top 6 best beaches for driving in the world in a BBC article for Autos, this beach is a must-visit. Make your way through the National Highway 66 which passes through Thalassery and Kannur to land at this one-stop wonder.
For those who love peace and tranquility, this is the beach you cannot miss. Black rocks line the edges of this beach which form a crescent-like shape. These black rocks protect the beach from the strong currents of the ocean. These rocks are a habitat for the Blue Mussel, a local delicacy. The sunset and the cool sea breeze make it perfect for an evening stroll.
A Drive through Heaven:
To those who love driving, have you driven on a beach? This beach is just the place for you! Considered the longest drive-in beach in India, the Muzhappilangad beach is ideal for driving as the sand on the beach is firm and thus does not allow your vehicles to sink. This long beach is not crowded making it a pleasure for a smooth drive. Young people also try out many driving stunts in cars like drifting and wheeling in bikes as this is a paradise for driving along the shore.
Adventure and more:
Since the 1990s, the beach has seen a constant arrival of European tourists during winter. Despite being a drive-in beach, this beach is a hotspot for bird-watching too. More than thirty species of birds arrive here in flocks during the migration season, making it a haven for photographers.
Being one of the most important tourist attractions in the districts of Kannur in Kerala, the beach festival is something the locals anticipate every year. The local youngsters take this festival as an opportunity to showcase their talents and stunts are performed.
For all the adventure freaks, there is more for you to do here. There are activities like paragliding, powerboating, parasailing, and catamaran rides available at this beach under the supervision of trained instructors.
For all the foodies, several shacks provide you with the best of the local Malabar cuisine. Their local delicacies are sure to tingle your tastebuds, craving for me. Don’t miss trying out the mussels- their best seller.
If you want to get away far from the madding crowd, this beach is assured to be your haven!
