Andrea Somer - My Fitness Mantra Is “Body, Mind, Spirit” (Health & Wellness Coach, Sweden)

Moving your body and eating healthy, along with mindfulness, has the biggest impact on your overall well-being and happiness. Not necessarily diets, but prioritizing and improving your gut health is the number one thing. 70% of our immune system is in our gut, so if our micro biome is off – most likely we will not feel that great. It also regulates your mood and can really have a big impact regulating stress, anxiety, depression.

1. Tell us more about yourself and your profession.

My name is Andrea Somer and I am originally from Stockholm, Sweden. I moved on my own to Los Angeles 7 years ago. I am a certified Personal Trainer, Meditation Teacher & Professional Life Coach. I coach clients in person, online and I coach at wellness retreats all over the world.

I have been most successful in personal training and something I believe has separated me from other trainers is that I have a holistic approach to fitness. While helping my clients reach their physical goals, their mental health has always been my biggest priority.

2. What is your fitness mantra?

My fitness mantra is “Body, Mind, Spirit”. It is all CONNECTED and we need to show up equally in these three areas. By showing up I mean doing the work that is necessary to elevate and grow, and a lot of the times it is not easy. Do the work you are avoiding and remember to have fun along the way.

3. What are some of the major misconceptions about diets and exercises?

I think the two biggest ones are:-

1. That there is a “one-fits-all” approach to reaching your goals. There is not. What works for me, might not work for you and vice versa. Everyone is so magically different and you have to customize your journey to YOUR BODY and what works for you.

2. “If I just eat healthy and workout I will reach my goals.” NO. There is so much more to this. What does eating “healthy” even mean? Yes, you might eat Vegan – but how many calories are you actually consuming. Fries are vegan too. I see this all the time.

Or, how hard are you actually working in the gym? Be honest with yourself. The most important things I think people overlook that is contributing to them not reaching their goals, is their Gut health, Hormones, Stress Management & Sleep.

4. How can one maintain a healthy lifestyle?

To make it sustainable you have to see it as a life-long commitment to yourself, not as a short-term goal. It is also important to not rely on motivation. You will not feel motivated all the time. Stay consistent and let your actions be your motivation.

Be patient and realize it is going to take time to turn it into a habit. That way it is easier to have a more balanced outlook and for us to not be so hard on ourselves when we get “off track”. Fall in love with the journey.

5. How can one build a successful career in this
 field?

Love what you do. Be passionate about helping others. Have the right intentions. Work hard. Surround yourself with like-minded people. Ask a lot of questions and continue to learn always.

My biggest advice to anyone starting out as a trainer is also: try not to compare yourself to others, another person’s light will not dim yours, follow your intuition and do the work.

6. What is one piece of advice you would like to give someone who wishes to lose weight?

Connect to your WHY. Write it down. Remind yourself of it often. Be consistent and be brutally honest with yourself, what you need to make this happen.

Outsource if you need to, a coach to hold you accountable is extremely helpful and especially important if you do not know what you should be doing in the gym or need help with nutrition.

7. How do diets and exercise contribute to overall well-being and happiness?

Moving your body and eating healthy, along with mindfulness, has the biggest impact on your overall well-being and happiness. Not necessarily diets, but prioritizing and improving your gut health is the number one thing.

70 % of our immune system is in our gut, so if our micro biome is off – most likely we will not feel that great. It also regulates your mood and can really have a big impact regulating stress, anxiety, depression.

Exercise has so many benefits of improving strength, posture, reduced risk of injury and of course endorphins and mood booster as well.

8. How do you keep your fitness training knowledge up to date?

I educate myself a lot and always seek new knowledge and certifications. My most recent certifications are Reiki, Pre-Post Natal & Hormone Health. This is my passion and I want to learn as much as possible, to be able to help as many people as I can.

Obviously, hands on experience, working with a lot of different clients and meeting other professionals in the industry is always valuable as well. You learn by doing.

9. Which is your favorite book and why?

One of my favorites is “The 4 Agreements”. Not necessarily the best one, but I do think it is extremely helpful to always come back to. It is quite short and straight to the point, and I love how obvious and relatable it feels when you read it.

I also read it at a certain time in life where I really needed it so I valued it a lot more. 4 rules to live by that simplifies life. Another great one is “The power of Now”.
