Indentured Labor in Guyana Has a Long History

During the colonial period, indentured labor was commonly rejected as a form of slavery, when farmers from countries such as India and China were transported to Africa and South America and forced to work for low or subsistence wages.

Despite the fact that indentured labor was banned by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948,it resulted in a massive Indian diaspora, with subsequent generations referred to as “descendants of Indian farmhands” in the NYT report.

Cricket Ties between India and Guyana

Guyana is the only nation on South American mainland with a cricketing tradition, thanks to its British links. Since the 1920’s,when the West Indies began playing international cricket, Guyanese players have been a part of the side. Clive Lloyd, who captained the West Indies during their most prolific period in the 1970’s and 1980’s,is arguably the most famous Guyanese cricketer.

In1975 and 1979,he led them to two World Cup victories, but in 1983,he lost to Kapil Dev.

Hooper grew up among Guyanese of Indian ancestry and he had described India as “another cricket-mad country.” Indians make up 65-70 % of Guyana’s population.

They observed and celebrated all Indian festivals, including which is one of the mostly celebrated festival of us.

In interview with Sportstar in 2018,Hopper said that he was really acquainted with our Indian culture.
