A quick recap - Elijah in Unbreakable was born with fragile bones because of which he was constantly in pain and to survive in the world he then developed his intellect.
Although it was unclear how David developed his superpowers in the same film, it is implied he may have developed them due to the trauma of almost getting drowned as a child.
Suffering from abuse in childhood, Kevin in Split develops multiple personalities, one from which (The Beast) he receives immense strength. He was diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Personal Verdict
“The twist and truth lies here”
Shyalaman always lives up to his great twists at the end of his superhero movies. We come to know Dr. Ellie Staple (the psychiatrist) is actually a member of a cabal sworn to killing super humans for good.
They kill them whether they are good or bad. The twist lies when Ellie and her secret organization members succeed in killing David and Kevin on being weakened by fighting each other. However, evil does not last long. Kevin’s former victim Casey, Elijah’s mother and David’s son release the footage into the world.
They hope people discover their superpowers and support these broken people who have no place in this contemporary world and help them from not getting killed by such organizations.
Though the end is what may disappoint people because by this time you would come to like the three characters, Shyalaman has beautifully portrayed each character’s strength, literalizing the theme of a survival mechanism as they had to lose something in order to find their true strength to survive in an unjust world towards them.
The Bottom Line
The movie is surely less grounded in the process but the glimpses of craziness, happening-level disasters, the twists as well as the epic performances by the cast would be enough to get you fixated throughout.
