About the Story
Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ is nothing less than a creative masterpiece. The story starts with Adelaide’s childhood where she is at a carnival with her family. Adelaide’s mother goes to the washroom and asks the father to take care of her.
Seeing her father too busy with games, Adelaide walks off towards the beach. On the beach she comes across a fun house called ‘Find Yourself’. After entering we get to see that it is something similar to ‘hall of mirrors’.
Adelaide loses herself in there and starts whistling ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider’. Soon after she hears the same whistle coming from a distance. The scene takes its plot where after a while Adelaide’s reflection smiles at her.
Then the scene cuts to Adelaide’s parents visiting a doctor who says that Adelaide has gone through deep trauma.
The next scene shows us an adult Adelaide going on a trip to the same beachfront house where she grew up in, along with her family. After reaching their house, her husband, Gabe Wilson, insists her to go to the Santa Cruz Beach (The place where it all happened). Adelaide is obviously against the idea of it but eventually agrees to it.
While driving towards there she notices horrible similarities of what she saw in her childhood and this concerns her. On the beach they get scared when Jason, her son, gets lost but is eventually found near the ‘Find Yourself’ fun house. Hence, they go back to their house.
Later in the house, Gabe and Adelaide have a fight about how she is sensing bad vibes from this place and feels like whatever happened to her is going to happen again.
Coincidentally, Jason comes in to tell them that a family is standing on their driveway. The scene where the family is shown is extremely creepy as they are holding hands with each other.
When Gabe tries to threaten them one of them starts chasing him and out of fear he runs back to his house and locks the door. Adelaide knew that her trauma was coming back. Soon we see that the house has been hijacked by them and the entire family has been trapped.
Then we learn the family is no one but the shadow version(also called the tethered) of Adelaid’s family!
They come from the underground world and face an opposite but a rather dark and unpleasant life as their counterparts on earth. Then Red (Adelaide’s tethered version) asks her family to chase down and kill Adelaide’s family.
(Spoilers Ahead!!)
The movie then shows us how the family escapes their shadow counterparts and how they win against them. Later we get to see the final part where Adelaide fights Red and wins her over.
Then the movie shows us a flashback showing what had originally happened in the ‘Find Yourself’ fun house during Adelaide’s childhood. We see that Adelaide’s tethered counterpart kidnaps Adelaide and they switch places. This changes the entire perspective of the movie!
Adelaide in the film is actually the shadow counterpart who grew up on earth and Red is actually Adelaide who got switched and had to adapt to the shadow people lifestyle (which involved eating rabbits!).
This part can really confuse the audience. Since the actual Adelaide was trapped underground, she planned a revenge to hijack the world and thus created a revolution.
After winning over them, Jason realises that his mother is actually a shadow counterpart but does not say anything about it. After this the movie ends. A normal viewer would definitely have many questions after watching this movie. It is a Jordan Peele movie after all!
Adelaide’s True Identity
Many viewers would have questions regarding who Adelaide actually is. From the movie what we can make out is Adelaide from earth is actually Red. She was kidnapped by her shadow counterpart in the fun house and they switched sides.
This is why Adelaide(the shadow counterpart) after getting out of the fun house, could not talk. Her parents mistook it for trauma. This changes the entire story of the film.
If the Adelaide we see later in her adulthood is the shadow counterpart then her kids Jason and Zora are also half tethered. This makes sense when we see that somehow Jason and Pluto(Tethered Jason) are mentally connected.
Many more theories can be made out of this movie like, Jason can actually be completely tethered as well! What other theories can you come up with?
Characters and Their Tethered Counterparts
1. Adelaide - Red
2. Jason - Pluto
3. Zora - Umbrae
4. Gabe - Abraham
The Bottom Line
Us by Jordan Peele is a highly recommended film by me. This movie is open to so many fan theories that after a point the viewer is confused about what the actual plot is (Like me!).
It is not exactly a jumpscare horror movie but is an excellent thriller film. Jordan
has yet again won our hearts with such an unique plot!
