I chose to jockey because I wanted to be on the front foot always. I had two options to start my career. Either I could choose a job in which they offered me a rich salary or I could choose my passion. I chose my passion. There are things money can’t buy and one of them is passion! I wanted to be heard! I wanted to be the voice of my country.
1. Tell us more about your background and journey.
When it comes to life, I feel like I am God’s favourite. I remember while growing up, I wanted to be a politician to create a change in the world, and no sooner than interest shifted to me wanting to be a journalist. And eventually ending up being none of the two haha.
So my actual journey started with me getting admission in Mass Communication from the best college in Asia. AJK MCRC. I never wanted to be a Radio Jockey. But got selected for all the companies that have come for the college placement. And because of the hype, it created, all that OMG! Radio Mirchi, Well done Mahvash!” I thought I should go for it as it’s nothing but another form of media. And after joining Radio, last year, that was the first time I made my account public on Instagram which changed my life.
2. Why did you chose RJ as a career and what were the first steps you took?
I chose to jockey because I wanted to be on the front foot always. I had two options to start my career. Either I could choose a job in which they offered me a rich salary or I could choose my passion. I chose my passion. There are things money can’t buy and one of them is passion! I wanted to be heard! I wanted to be the voice of my country. I chose to be a radio jockey, I wanted to make a change, I wanted my voice TO BE HEARD.
3. What challenges can one face during live calls?
Usually, in radio stations, we don’t take any live calls. Because you never really what the other person would say. So sometimes people end up saying something about politicians or some statement that can hurt religious sentiments, that is why we don’t take live calls. All calls are taken 5 minutes before making them live and then the controversial part is edited.
4. What are the skills required to be a radio jockey?
Earlier, it was hugely about the voice quality but these days, creativity matters. If I tell you the story of a sea, you must start to see it flowing already. That’s the power of a storyteller! One needs to be a good storyteller, creative in their content in such a way that people are hooked to your station when it takes them a nanosecond to change the frequency.
5. Does one also need to be technologically savvy in your favourite?
No! I believe that when it comes to technology, it can be learned. Something like creativity is very subjective and cannot be learned I believe. But technology keeps evolving, I knew nothing when I entered that studio. And now I know sufficient to run a show.
6. What makes a person connect with their audience as an RJ?
This is subjective as well but I would suggest you be raw and spontaneous. Your content needs to be massy! It should be such that it’s appealing to everyone starting from a person sitting in a car to an auto driver.
7. Who is your inspiration and why?
My inspiration is my mother. She is a gynaecologist. In a family like mine, I have seen a strong woman who got married in class 9th and continued her medical degree after her wedding. She gave her medical exam when she was 9 months pregnant. A woman as determined and strong as her is what I want to become.
8. Which is your favourite book and why?
The last book I read was Othello by Shakespeare. One of the best plays I have ever read. Though I am not into books much as I don't get enough time to finish one. More of movies and web series sort of a person.
