Summary Of The Vietnam War - Timeline, Allies, Causes and Effects

The contradiction between the South and North Vietnam lead to “The Great Vietnam War “, which is also called the Second Indo China War.

It includes the state of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

This battle lasted for about 19 years from 1st November, 1995 till 30th April, 1975.

Allied Powers

China, Union of soviet social republic and the Communist Republic were the supporting countries of North Vietnam.

The communist republic was under the control of Ho Chi Minh.   

United States, South Korea, Australia, Thailand and the anti-communist allies were the supporting countries of South Vietnam.

The anti communist republic was under the control of Ngo Dinh Diem.

Involvement of USA:

The most specific reason for the involvement of United States in the Vietnam War was to free Vietnam from the French and Japanese, the civil war between Ho Chi Minh and Ngo Dinh Diem, the Domino theory (Cold war policy), the incident on the gulf of Tonkin.

Rise Of Communism

Communism is to transform the private property to public property by taking control over the production areas like mines, industries, mills etc.

The Vietnam War gave rise to Communism by popularizing the concept amongst the allied powers.

The main events that happened during the Vietnam War were

1954 – Geneva Agreement

1961 – Trail dust operation starts

1962 – Strategic hamlet Program

1963 – Attack on Buddhist temples in South Vietnam

1964 – United States attack on the North Vietnam

1965 – Rolling thunder operation

1966 – Operation hasting

1967 – Operation kingfisher

1968 – My Lai massacre

1969 – Attack on Cambodia

1970 – Invasion of Cambodia

1973 - Paris peace conference, United States stepped out of the Vietnam War

1975 – Communist defeated South Vietnam

Cause Of The War:

1. The main cause of the war was the invasion of Japanese on the Vietnamese.

2. Vietnam was divided into North and South Vietnam because of the actions of French colonialism during 1954 to 1975.

3. To defeat both the Japanese and the French colonial union, Ho Chi Minh established an organization with China and the Soviet Union and to spread communism all over the world.   

4. Domination of Europe over Vietnam due to poverty.

5. North Vietnam received equal support from both China and the Soviet Union

Effects:

The frailty of the government lead to the downfall of South Vietnam. About 500000, non-combatants died during the war.

Agent Orange, a chemical was sprayed over the field of Vietnam to destroy the food crops therefore production of food was much less and that chemical has an effect on children till this day.

More than two million people were forced to migrate from Vietnam.

One million Soldiers were killed in North Vietnam, two hundred and fifty thousand soldiers were killed in South Vietnam and fifty thousand soldiers were killed in United States.

Finally, the war came to an end by the massive fall of the most populous city called “Saigon”.
