As Hester is forced to ascend up a scaffold to face public disgrace for her sin, a crowd watches with folded arms. Hester is afraid to see her estranged husband, Chillingworth, among the audience while on the scaffold. He, too, recognizes her and is stunned.
Chillingworth acts as if he doesn't know Hester and hears her story from a man in the crowd: she was married to an English professor who was supposed to accompany her to Boston but never arrived. She fell into sin after two years, committing adultery, which resulted in her baby and the red "A" on her breast.

Chillingworth believes that the unknown man will be discovered, but when beloved local Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale orders Hester to disclose the guy's identity, she refuses and is returned to her cell. Chillingworth disguises himself as a doctor to get access to Hester's cell, where he forces her to vow that she would never reveal that he is her husband.
Three years have gone by. Hester gets released from jail and flees to the outskirts of Boston, close to the forest. She makes a career as a seamstress, but she is still shunned by her employers. Pearl becomes infatuated with the scarlet letter when Hester refuses to tell her what it means.

Meanwhile, Chillingworth is working as a physician in Boston, despite his lack of any medical training. Dimmesdale, who has been diagnosed with heart disease, is one of his patients. Chillingworth moves in with Dimmesdale full-time to care for him and suspects a link between Dimmesdale's heart condition and Hester's crime.
Chillingworth concludes that Dimmesdale is Hester's lover when he notices that Dimmesdale has carved a scarlet letter-like mark over his heart. Chillingworth makes the decision to torture and humiliates Dimmesdale.

Dimmesdale's condition deteriorates under Chillingworth's harsh care. Dimmesdale's remorse about committing and hiding adultery causes him much distress. As a kind of punishment, he even deprives himself of food and lashes himself.
Dimmesdale mounts the same scaffold on which Hester was publicly humiliated one night. Hester and Pearl happen to walk by at that precise moment and join Dimmesdale on the scaffold. A meteor in the shape of a scarlet "A" lights up the sky, illuminating Chillingworth who stands nearby.
Hester makes the decision to assist Dimmesdale and begs Chillingworth to quit torturing him. Chillingworth admits that he's turned nasty and wicked, but claims that by keeping his truth hidden from the world, he's really saving Dimmesdale. Hester eventually takes matters into her own hands, tracking down Dimmesdale in the woods and revealing Chillingworth's actual identity to him.

She persuades Dimmesdale to join her and Pearl in fleeing to Europe, and they make preparations to board a ship the day following Dimmesdale's major sermon.
The sermon is delivered by Dimmesdale (the best of his life). He understands, however, that he is dying and will not make it to Europe. He invites Hester and Pearl to accompany him on the scaffold. He bares his chest and confesses his fault to the crowd, showing a scarlet letter engraved into his own skin. As Pearl kisses him for the first time, he dies.
Hester and Pearl are on their way out of Boston. A year after Dimmesdale, Chillingworth passes away, leaving Pearl a tiny inheritance. Hester returns to her cottage on the outskirts of town several years later. Her letter "A" is still on her chest. Pearl has married into a wealthy family in Europe and occasionally writes to Hester.
