Niladri Shankar Roy - Theories Don’t Tell You How to Make Something Work, It’s the Skills and the Instincts Do (Director - Times Internet)

I have seen several professionals who have got minimum education but are successfully working in renowned organizations. On the contrary, I also believe, basic education is very necessary for all professional fields along with the skills.

Tell us about your background, journey, and upbringing.

Well, I am basically from Kolkata. I have grown up in a middle-class Bengali traditional joint family. Those were the golden days. Though I have spent my childhood with lots of anxiety and frustrations, as my mother had Huntington's disease.

Some days were really bad where I am cooking, taking care of my mother, doing daily house chores, and studying but my father and my family members have always supported me and so have my friends and I am very fortunate to have them in my life. After my mother passed away, I started focusing on myself.

I took admission to a college in Kolkata and I also started gathering experiences in all departments to understand what I like (still exploring and learning more). It all started with blogging, digital journalism and slowly I started working in productions and worked with a few Bengali production houses as an assistant director then later chief assistant director.

I finished my graduation and I wanted to study more but my father said he can't manage the rest of the expenses for two years. I knew I had to get a job there but it was also a very risky move for me. My friend's mother helped me at that
point of time and motivated me to go there and take the risk.

Sometimes you need that one little push and everything changes. I reached Mumbai and got a call from tvf on the very same day. I worked with TVF for almost two years as an assistant director. I had my real fun days and it is great
that you have fun at work.

My supervising producer also supported me for post-graduation to manage leaves. Later, to grow and learn more, I joined bytedance in a very different role from what I was doing as a content operations specialist and it was challenging and later, I was enjoying that and my team was great and the whole experience was extraordinary.

Bytedance gave me that confidence in myself. Sadly, all good things come to an end. Now, I have joined Times Internet as a Video Director for iDiva. As of now, it is quite the journey so far as an individual especially mentally.

I haven't had the opportunity to learn management but I wish to. But, I always say, Management starts at home. I have managed my home as a child starting from a grocery list, vegetable shopping, and what not and still doing. It is the best practices early example of management that you can see. So practically, I have managed so far, haha!

Studies today show that an organization can lose INR 10 lakh (~ $17,000) on average on a wrong hire or for hiring someone with a false degree. The only tried and tested way to prevent frauds is via a thorough background verification process. How did you rise to the highest echelons and what are your future plans?

To be honest, I am 25. I believe I am just at the beginning of my journey and so many things to learn and explore as much as I can. I started early with freelance work, unpaid work to learn more, and gradually I started learning the skills.

Throughout this time, I am grateful to people who have helped me so far, because it is true that without people’s support be it mentally, physically, or rather professionally, it is difficult to balance things.

Well, I don’t think of future plans like ‘10 years from now’ sort of examples as I have switched to various roles which I didn’t even know I could do. So, for me, I am still finding my way through learning. But very strongly, I want to be a professional who can balance personal time also. That’s like a dream, isn’t it?

What does your typical workday look like?

My workday mostly covers meetings with the team and coordination with the writers, editors, social media teams from producing content to publishing content. We all are shooting from home also due to the pandemic and trying to make content for iDiva as creative as possible.

With that, I also like to spend time with my family, friends, and pets. Along with that, scrolling through Instagram and Linkedin.

Several global companies have come out and thrown their support behind not need a formal education. What is your opinion about this?

Well, I believe education is not everything. Theories don’t tell you how to make something work, it’s the skills and the instincts do. My salute to those companies who have thought of this.

I have seen several professionals who have got minimum education but are successfully working in renowned organizations. On the contrary, I also believe, basic education is very necessary for all professional fields along with the skills.

How do you handle someone who has lied on their resume?

I will talk about an incident where I got to know that people lie on their resumes as well. I was helping a friend to modify the resume and I found out as he mentioned that the things that have been mentioned are false.

Now, I really don’t appreciate lying on the resume as it is sort of a betrayal (based on how big a lie it is if it is related to the job role that person has applied for). I politely asked that friend to delete all those false experiences and skills.

For job applicants who're lying on resumes with thousands of experiences, instead, I would take freshers and make them learn and make the best out of them so that they don’t have to lie.

How has covid changed things at your workplace & which of these changes do you intend to make permanently?

Covid has definitely changed our perspectives. We are now shooting from home, who thought about that before covid. We don’t intend to keep this forever because that’s not possible if you think production-wise, but for now, as a matter of safety for each teammate, we are shooting from home. That’s the biggest change for my current workplace.

What advice do you have for those starting their career and those who are eyeing the top job?

I would say, start as early as possible and develop more skills. Research about what you want to do. Talk to the seniors or people you trust which will give you more insights.

There are social media platforms today like Linkedin, Facebook, etc, connect with the right person and a recommendation can get you there.

Which is your favorite book/show and why?

To be honest, I am not much of a bookworm. But, I like the book ‘ The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy. It’s a self-help book that gives you motivation and inspires you to believe in yourself. It also talks about the complexities that we as human beings have and how you can turn into a positive one.
