“Youth is like a lush, spring green. At a distance spring is green. Look at it closely and you’ll see that it’s lusher and more dazzling.”
Romance in Korean dramas involving youth is a necessary subject and it has yet again recurred in ‘At a Distance, Spring is Green’.
Introduction
Drama’s Name - At a Distance, Spring is Green (2021)
Directed by - Kim Jung-Hyun
No. of Episodes - 12
Genre - Coming of Age & Slice of life
Original Language - Korean
Synopsis
The drama is set in Myungil University and revolves around the story of three young adults whose lives appear to be like the beauty of spring from afar but cold and harsh when viewed up close.
About the Drama
The drama’s episodes aired on Mondays and Tuesdays on KBS2 and other free platforms such as Kissasian, Dramacool, etc. For international fans, the drama is available to stream with English subtitles on Viki and IQiyi (exclusively for southeast Asian regions).
It includes epic performances by an ensemble cast starring Park Ji-hoon, Kang Min-ah, Bae In-hyuk, Kwon Eun-bin, Woo Da-vi, Choi Jung-woo, etc. It is a coming-of-age drama that seems to claim and portray the theme of a “Misaeng (incomplete life)” set on campus.
However, the drama is more focused on the subject of ‘romance’ than ‘personal growth’. Hence, it stands to see if it would be able to resonate with the youth. The drama is based on a webtoon of the same title.
First Impression - Drama Review
The reason I watched this drama is because of the three main characters who have been on my favorite list of actors for a long time now. Park Ji-hoon has been the chubby ‘idol’ I adore since he was a member of the boy band ‘Wanna One’.
His pretty reasonable acting in his first drama ‘Love Revolution (2020)’ with a lead role was insanely eye-catching but the main reason was me being a fan of his vocals and songs.
The next is Kang Mi-nah. Her roles in Beyond Evil, Memorist, True Beauty, and The Temperature of Love were accurate enough to make me want to like her acting.
Furthermore, our new “Goblin’ who has just started his journey in the entertainment industry is Bae In-hyuk. His first main role in the drama ‘Kiss Goblin’ with mesmerizing looks was why I started supporting his journey.
“A storyline pure, rich, and meaningful in nature.”
But that’s not it, this drama will not only enlighten and make you aware of the challenges of youth in the subject of romance but friendships, integrity, kindness, trust, and other similar aspects.
You will find yourself at certain instances nodding your head and agreeing to the difficulties faced which may also teach you how to overcome them. It conveys the message of consolation and how important it is to have someone supporting you in life, especially during the time when you have just started understanding life and the world.
It also depicts the brutal cruelty people have faced or do face and how it leaves scars that make it difficult for them to recover from.
To begin with, So-bin is traumatized by bullying due to family circumstances and wishes to live a decent life. Second, freshman Jun is traumatized by childhood violence and abuse by his father but portrays himself as a happy and sociable individual with lots of wealth.
He seeks affection and attention from everyone at the university only to realize people start taking advantage of his money coming from a rich family and has no friends in his close circle to share problems with.
Furthermore, Su Hyeon comes from a poor family with financial difficulties which is why he has to keep up with several part-time jobs to support his education, brother’s education, and mother’s illness.
He is cold to everyone at the university and wishes to not indulge in any relationships. All characters in the drama have dark narratives that slowly lighten up as the drama progresses and relationships are developed.

The drama mainly centers around two male protagonists, Jun and Su-Hyeon, both of whom come from completely opposite backgrounds suffering from their own pains and how they come to develop a strong bond. I assure you ‘bromance’ is the new ‘romance’; you will watch to relive their playful yet meaningful scenes.
As the drama does not follow the traditional relationship between the male and female leads focusing more on the narratives and emotional threads of the two male characters which are easy to resonate with although not convincing enough, is why you should watch the drama.
Heart-wrenching Dialogues from the Drama
“My smile is no longer fake.”
“You see you can’t control everything in life.”
“Do you know what is really miserable? Being so broke that you can’t protect those dear to you.”
“You need to master walking alone to walk with anybody.”
“If ever someone says awful things to you, it means that person is hurting inside. Do not take it to your heart, even if it’s something your parents said.”
The Bottom Line
If you want to watch a deep sentimental drama devoid of cliched youthful romance then this is the one and I hope you don’t get disappointed.
My ratings for the drama - 4 on 5
